Email yet from OPM demanding everyone provide a list of 5 accomplishments from last week. Failure to respond will be viewed as resignation.

Musk said it's going out to all federal employees this weekend. I got mine an hour ago.

On one hand, firing a bunch of federal employees will save virtually nothing of our federal budget yet decimate our ranks. On the other hand, we cannot go years without passing audits and have no accountability, that hurts public trust.

So, if this was every year, I’d roll my eyes. But it’s the first time ever that we had any accountability. So it seems reasonable.

What would you say you do here? Sorry, but about every company does this.

Thanks for being reasonable yourself on this. Too many people are acting like it’s the worse thing ever.

It's not accountability when you arbitrarily fire probationary employees without any federal protections just because you can, many of whom haven't had enough time to even prove themselves as workers yet you can just label them as poor performers

Just do what Muskrat and The Donald would do! Make some sh!t up!

Seriously, good luck with this.

This is a perfect example of how to run a successful business. Initially, evaluate and cut anyone who even seems like they may not be “all in” or valuable to the company . Then, knowing you are understaffed, rehire at a lower rate to eliminate needless positions and place those that you hand pick into the other positions. It happens every day in corporate America.
For those getting these emails, I feel for you because I’m sure it’s a royal pain in the ass. But persevere and show your worth. There’s usually a reward on the other side of all this turmoil for those that survive. Good luck to you guys.

With all due respect, what was your reply? Assuming of course any response will be fact checked by Elon. 😬

Have you ever run a company or been in a position of leadership at one? Your comment suggests not.

What Trump and Musk are doing is the opposite of proven best practices. Evaluating and cutting staff is a complex process that requires effort, thought and time. Even companies like Goldman, that cuts the bottom 10% of performers each year, has a very clear and well understood approach to determining who stays and who goes. The people who end up being cut are rarely surprised.

What DOGE is doing is ensuring that the top performers, who always have the most marketable skills, will flee the chaos for a more productive environment. You can’t evaluate 2.6m federal employees based on a five bullet point email. That’s just idiotic, and has never happened at any large corporation I have heard of other than at Twitter after Elon bought it. Comparing an online platform company to the entire federal government doesn’t hold up at all.

Pine I didn't get the email but it's only because I was fired a week ago for being probationary.

My two cents, whatever you put in that email will be used against you to fire you. This is not a way to figure out who's worth keeping vs. who's worth firing. Tread lightly man.

Good luck and hold it down for all the folks who have already been let go.

Both the State Department and the FBI have told their employees to ignore the email.

Elon is threatening people's livelihoods (as you know better than most) and it's a complete clown show. This is all going to end up in court.

Exactly
good lord people
layoffs happen every fing day lol
Layoffs happen every day among federal agencies too. No one has a problem with that normal model.

Trump and Elon are just firing people with no clear objective or reason. Probationary employees are told they suck at their job and must go. Not only is that not true, but it is the most incompetent approach of leadership.

They are purposefully treating fed employees in a vindictive manner. As if they have failed at their job. They clearly are only interested in destroying morale and instilling fear in the workforce. It’s sophomoric, unprofessional, and demonstrates complete incompetence, which ironically is what they criticize fed employees of. It’s yet another example of PROJECTION by Trump and his sycophantic cabal.

I don’t like seeing anyone lose their jobs. I’m private sector Fintech sales and my company did 3 RIFs last year and they are ambushes when they come, no warning, turn in your stuff here’s the package. I basically live quarter to quarter with these guys. It’s a high risk/reward shit show. Always have a plan B and control what you can control. I know I’m really good at what I do but sometimes you just end up without a chair when the music stops. Life in corporate America.

Don’t think it is true that layoffs happen everyday in federal agencies. There have been periods when there were layoffs (not many) but these are rare. I think it is fair to criticize the way the layoffs are occurring. There is a human element to this that many on my side don’t want to recognize, but the government had become bloated and it is true that almost everyone in corporate America has to go through periods where they are either laid off or subject to layoffs.

Fed employees are fired every day for normal reasons analogous with those let go in the private sector. I let 3 go last year. They deserved it. I still spent time following protocols necessary to do so.

This is not rocket science. What is happening with DOGE is equivalent to having Elon declare UGA’s football program is bloated and full of corruption, so we are going to make Jere and Kirby accept the release of 10%of our recent signing class or the youngest player at each position to start. Then we’ll go to work laying off the most junior staff members. We are going to do it by email and tell them it’s because they suck. And then I’m gonna send an email to remaining players and tell them to send me copies of their offseason workout accomplishments while I download their workout data from last season. It’s idiotic and UGA leadership wouldn’t allow it.

I am afraid you will have to accept this.

I have, have ran a couple of companies before. Actually took over one of them once they filed chapter 11. Had them profitable within a year and a half - then sold them off.

Cutting back on expenses was a part of that, IE layoffs.

Pretty sure Trump and crew are cutting out what they believe is waste in payroll. I think most would agree that government is too big and want changes…which is what he is doing.

Is he laying off the right people (?) - who knows, all I know is what I am reading. But one thing is probably inevitable, mistakes will be made.

But there also will be a lot of good come from it imo, time will tell.

Nobody wants to default/bankrupt. Paying more out than what’s coming in is not a good combo.

With that said, I hate it for those that are losing their jobs. But I do understand what “docindosta” is saying. I for one would certainly like to see things run more like a business, especially the accountability part. That is part of what got him elected.

Well, some may get hired back. I used to work for an engineering firm that would layoff people on Friday and have an ad for people in Sunday’s paper. Or near enough. This wholesale layoff business may uncover some holes in their plan. I used to think, my god, they laid off advanced degreed people and they kept me! But you’re right. A business needs many different skills, at the right pay grade, to work effectively. Maybe this holds true for the government

Not surprised, use to be and probably still is that way. Legally, you had to do it if you’re replacing the same position.

undoing stuff just like dementia joe.

As a former business owner I had to fill out dozens of forms required by the government "under the penalty of law". Most of these took hours, if not days to fill out. It's interesting to me that fed employees are bitching about taking 5 minutes to fill out a form.

Why should they have protections? Who gave us protections from stupid govt employees with no accountability. Who gave trump protection from a weaponized judicial system. Who gave us protection from untested, hurried, and ineffective vaccines.

The govt hired way too many people under Biden to support the employment numbers. Smaller # of employees equals smaller govt and smaller govt is ALWAYS better

Good luck Pine.

This place is toxic af. Almost cult like.

I tried to start a thread just presenting the facts based on what happened to me as I had first hand knowledge. I wasn’t trying to change anyone’s mind or debate either side. Just facts about how this has been handled. It was met with the same reaction you’re getting here.

This forum is a cesspool of angry people.

You think too many federal employees were hired under Biden? More federal employees were employed during the 50s (almost as many), 60s, 70s, 80s, & 90s than exist today.

There are a lot more Americans today than during 50s & 60s yet the federal workforce has not grown in accordance to our population

In that thread most had great personal sympathy for you, but still supported DOGE. Don't know how that is toxic.

The reality is that you worked for a particularly bad government. History is usually not kind to those that do. It is absolutely true that a bureaucrat for some civilian office in 1930s Germany or the Soviet Union is far detached from the atrocities committed by that regime, but they were also unlikely to get much sympathy when sharing the challenges that came with unemployment.
