This is a formality of parliamentary procedure. I didn’t think I would ever type this but AOC is right regarding her above tweet.
Did she have to second his nomination or did she choose to?
She was probably asked to do so by either Bernie’s camp or the DNC. Normally the people who do the nominating and seconding are already worked out well in advance.
If it wasn’t her someone else would do it - the nomination has to be moved and seconded for it to proceed to the floor. They threw her a bone and have her a moment. In the spotlight. There’s really nothing to see her outside of boring parliamentary procedure, I promise.
A freshman congressperson rarely gets that opportunity. Like her or not, she is very influential with the party. They didn't really explain the nomination, which is simply a nod to the runner up, and it seems confusing to a lot of people.
