Soros definitely is the archetype for this role, but his son is to the true leader of his political ops now which I put in the inherit bucket.

Gates could certainly qualify, though I think his focus is more global than domestic. More Davos than DNC. He is obviously a major donor to Democrats, but he's not trying to set gun policy or something like that. He wants to keep USAID-style funding flowing though obviously.

Bloomberg would probably fit the bill, though again I think he's to the right of your average Democrat politician.
