Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man
(Jesus) in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

You need to go on to Matthew 25 to see what Jesus says about all of Matthew 24.

You need to go on to Matthew 25 to see what Jesus says about all of Matthew 24.
Four stories. The central figure in each story is Yeshua. In each story there were Believers that kept the faith and those that did not keep the faith. You can say they lived unhappily ever after. In the second story, back then, when you went to a Jewish wedding you were supposed to have enough oil for your lamp for both the wedding and the reception. Five did not have enough oil left for the reception, they did not make it.

Outline from my Sunday school lesson on it a while back..... All courtesy of David Pawson Commentary on Matthew 🙂

A) Six Features of these four stories
1. Center around one person – owner of house, bridegroom, businessman, king
2. In every story a crisis is precipitated by the return of the central figure AFTER A
LONG TIME
3. Some people were ready – How?
a. First story the faithful servant is ready because he got on with the job he
was supposed to do
b. Second story the bridesmaids ready because they had built up enough
resources to carry on for some time
c. Third story tells us that if God has invested anything in us, he is expecting
interest back.
d. Fourth story is those who are ready are those who are caring for the needs
of Christ’s brethren.
4. Those who are ready are rewarded
a. First story reward for being faithful is greater responsibility
b. Second story there is an opportunity to celebrate, enter into joyful
celebration.
c. Third story is both he first and second mixed together, promotion and joy
d. Fourth story it is to reign with Christ on a throne, enter into a kingship
prepared. There are two sides to being prepared
5. Some were not ready – because they had NOT done certain things
a. First case a man had been left to give food to other servants and did not.
b. Second case they were supposed to have enough oil and did not.
c. Third case the man with one talent, bag of gold, had failed to improve it.
d. Fourth case, they gave the whole thing away by the tone of their response
6. The unready are punished.
a. They are not forgiven – not one of them.
b. They are not given a second chance – not one of them.
c. Advent – The Second Coming – Judgement
d. In each story the people who are finally rejected had a connection with the
central figure in the story.

B) So, how can we be ready? What was wrong with those who were not ready?
1. Their relationship with the lord was inadequate
2. Their relationship with his brethren was inadequate
a. He did not recognize them ( “I don’t know you”)
b. They had not recognized him

Summary:. It's not the faith we begin with, it's the faith that we finish up with. Jesus was telling this to his disciples... Believers.
