Now. We. Know.

Thanks to newly-declassified documents from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of State released to government watchdog Judicial Watch, here’s what we know, quite simply:

1.) The Obama administration indeed knew almost immediately who committed the 2012 attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi — it was associates of al-Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood.

As Examiner.com reports:

DOD almost immediately reported that the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was committed by the al Qaeda and Muslim Brotherhood-linked “Brigades of the Captive Omar Abdul Rahman” (BCOAR), and had been planned at least 10 days in advance.

2.) The administration knew weapons were being shipped from Benghazi to rebel troops — including ISIS — in Syria.

The documents obtained by Judicial Watch also provide the first official documentation that the Obama administration was well aware that weapons were being shipped from Benghazi to rebel troops — including members from ISIS, the Al-Nusra Front and other Islamist terror groups — in Syria.

3.) And — wait for it — Obama’s administration intentionally helped give rise to ISIS. It even trained them.

U.S. intelligence documents released to a government watchdog confirms the suspicions that the United States and some of its so-called coalition partners had actually facilitated the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as an effective adversary against the government of the Syrian dictator President Bashar al-Assad. In addition, ISIS members were initially trained by members and contractors of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) at facilities in Jordan in 2012. The original goal was to weaken the Syrian government which had engaged in war crimes against their own people, according to a number of reports on Sunday.

The motivation to use a cover story for Benghazi is obvious. They didn't want to be perceived as ill-prepared for a terrorist attack. Thus the "spontaneous uprising" explanation in retaliation for the video. They thought the public would buy it because there had actually been spontaneous uprisings in other countries. Personally, I think the failure to meet requests for additional support is the bigger scandal than the temporary use of a PR cover story.

As for arming and training ISIS, it's important to describe this accurately. John McCain, the Security Council, and the State Department (i.e. Hillary) had all been urging Obama to arm Syrian rebels for 2+ years in order to oppose the Assad regime in Syria. Obama resisted this initially specifically because he was afraid we'd be arming our enemies, just as we did in the 90's when we armed Mujahedin rebels against the Soviets in Afghanistan only for them later to become Al Qaeda. Obama also feared that the rebel resistance wouldn't be enough to actually force Assad out of power, and given the power vacuum that already exists in the region after removing Saddam, you have to wonder if it would even be to our long-term benefit to remove Assad anyway. That depends greatly on who would replace him. But once Assad became more and more provocative in gassing his own people, even after Obama's "red line" ultimatum, and once ISIS began to emerge as a greater threat, Obama finally caved and agreed to arm and train what we thought would be the "moderate" rebel opposition. Problem is, the CIA had a very difficult time trying to vet the rebels. Many of those that we armed and trained in Jordan have since joined ISIS and are using the training and weapons we gave them to seize territory and commit acts of genocide in both Syria and Iraq. Basically, the worst-case scenario that Obama feared came true. He deserves some blame for eventually going along with the plan, but essentially everyone around him was urging him to do so, not just his administration, but GOP members of the Security Council as well.

I know I keep beating this drum, but every time we take aggressive, interventionist action in the Middle East, it comes back to haunt us. This is just the latest example of many.

Sounds reasonable.

As to your last point, you're right, but at times what is the alternative? The Middle East controls the worlds oil supply. Any disruption of it causes severe economic problems globally which impact us all in a negative manner. You add in allowing Islamists terrorists control of the oil and the subsequent money, there is a serious potential for everything from increased terrorists actions here in the US and Europe, to nuclear proliferation to the start of a world war. Its a tough nut to crack.

Why? Because lying is a cornerstone of liberals. Its what they do, they'll lie when the truth sounds better

They lied because it didn't fit their pre-election rhetoric that they killed Bin Laden and thus al Qaeda was on the run. Susan Rice and Hillary among others agreed to stick to and repeat the lie about the video to protect Obama and help him win re-election. They couldn't admit that a terrorist group had planned an attack that killed a U.S. Ambassador among others.

"Some of the blame...", no he deserves it all. No one "urged" him to train or arm ISIS. His bungling leadership sent the arms to the wrong outfit. No other way to put it. Even if he had been urged too act in such a foolish manner, it was his decision and his alone.
