ALABAMA
Alabama's state dessert is a lane cake. This four layer butter cake filled with a bourbon-raisin custard originated in Alabama but soon became a southern classic.
ALASKA
Unsurprisingly, the state fish of Alaska is a King Salmon or Chinook Salmon, known for being extra big and full of flavor. If you happen to get your hands on one, try making salmon with truffle oil and potatoes.
ARKANSAS
Did you know that dairy farming is a big part of Arkansas' industry? The state government is so proud of milk's health benefits, that in 1985, they named the state beverage cow's milk!
ARIZONA
Arizona doesn't have an official state food, but if we were to decide we'd choose the deep fried Tex-Mex burrito, the chimichanga. Chances are you've tried one without ever even setting foot in Arizona because that's how widespread they've become. And for good reason, too! CALIFORNIA
California finally declared state foods in 2013, likely as a way to promote their agriculture. Their state nut is the almond and their state fruit is the avocado. Channel that California freshness with this easy avocado almond soup!
COLORADO
Colorado does not have an official state food, but no trip there would be complete without a steaming bowl of chili verde. If you're craving it at home, then try out this version of slow cooker pork chili verde.
DELAWARE
Deleware's state dessert is peach custard pie, probably stemming from the peach farm industry that flourished until the beginning of the 20th century.
FLORIDA
Because the Florida state beverage is orange juice and their state fruit is (unsurprisingly) the orange, you might be a little surprised to learn that the state dessert is in fact key lime pie!
HAWAII
Hawaii doesn't have an official state food, but it is the only state in the U.S. that has been able to take Spam to the next level. Be sure to try Spam Musubi to experience a one-of-a-kind Hawaiian dish!
IDAHO Idaho takes pride in its agriculture and it shows through its choice of state food! The state vegetable is a potato (as expected), and the state fruit is a huckleberry.
ILLINOIS
Illinois is a big agriculture state, as evidenced by their state fruit the Gold Rush apple. Their state dessert is traditional pumpkin pie. Most interestingly, the Illinois state snack is popcorn. Chicagoans in particular love flavored popcorn. Figure out why by making your own flavored popcorn.
KANSAS
Kansas has yet to declare a state food, yet you simply can't visit Kansas without chowing down on some melt-in-your-mouth ribs. Like these grilled baby back ribs with Kansas city rib rub for example, which will give you a great idea of what to expect when visiting Kansas.
LOUISIANA
Louisana has a lot of remarkable food in general and the state has decided to make it known officially. Thestate fruit is the strawberry and their state vegetable is the sweet potato. Their official dish is gumbo (make gumbo at home here), and they have an offical meat pie called "Natchitoches meat pie" consisting of ground beef, pork, onions, and peppers.
MAINE
Maine sure knows how to name their food and drink! The official state soft drink is called MOXIE, one of the first sodas in the US. And their state treat is whoopie pie. Whoopie pies are common in New England; trymaking whoopie pie at home.
MARYLAND
Unsurprisingly, Maryland's state food is the blue crab, and their state dessert is the Smith Island cake, a delicious cake with 8 to 10 layers of yellow cake with frosting in between. Try out some Maryland cookin' with these easy crab cakes made Smith Island style.
MASSACHUSETTS
The state dessert of Massachusetts is the Boston Cream pie. The people of Massachusetts are so proud of those cream pies that their state donut is the Boston cream donut!
MICHIGAN
There's no official Michigan treat, but we'd nominate UP, or Yooper pasties! They are a classic Michigan treat, similar to a hand pie or empanada, and stuffed with meat and vegetables.
MINNESOTA
Minnesota certainly grows some interesting food. Their official state grain is wild rice and their state mushroom is the morel. They also grow plenty of blueberries and their state muffin is a blueberry muffin! Show your Minnesota muffin spirit by making these quick blueberry muffins at home!
MISSISSIPPI
Although this state boasts no official state food, we nominate the Mississippi mud pie as the state dessert. Named after the famously muddy banks of the Mississippi river, the pie has a delicious brown, chocolatey filling! It's a delicious, no-bake pie that you're going to get totally addicted to.
MONTANA
While Montana does not have an official state food, we'd be the first to vote huckleberry pie as the official dessert or pie. If you're headed to Montana, then chances are you're going to be enjoying some huckleberry pie at some point during your trip. A cross in flavor between blueberries and raspberries, you should definitely try these huckleberry hand pies!
NEBRASKA
Nebraska is famous for its different types of meat pies. There is no official state food, but we'd probably nominate meat pie as the state meal or cabbage and meat pie runza as the official state meat pie!
NEVADA
Nevada does not have an official state food, but we'd nominate shrimp cocktails as the official appetizer and onions as the official vegetable. Nevada has a very strong onion industry and shrimp cocktail has graced the starters menu as a standard all over the state!
NEW HAMPSHIRE
New Hampshire takes a lot of pride in their pumpkins! Their state fruit is a pumpkin, which they honor every year with a big pumpkin festival every fall.
NEW JERSEY
The New Jersey state fruit is the High Bush blueberry. A class of fourth graders campaigned for this designation by getting their idea introduced as legislation and following through with lobbying and media attention. They even made presentations at Senate and Assembly committees!
NEW MEXICO
New Mexico's state cookie is the bizcochito, a delicious butter cookie with anise and cinnamon. Its state vegetable is the new mexico chile and pinto beans.
NEW YORK
While we were expecting pizza to be somewhere on New York's list of official foods, it turns out that the official foods are a lot healthier than expected. Their state snack is yogurt and their state fruit is an apple. Their sweet tooth does comes out a little in their choice of state muffin: an apple muffin!
NORTH CAROLINA
North Carolina takes pride what it can grow! Its official state red berry (because there are all sorts of red berries in North Carolina) is the strawberry. The state fruit is the Scuppernong grape, and their state vegetable is the sweet potato.
NORTH DAKOTA
The official state fruit of North Dakota is the chokecherry, also known as the bitter berry or the Virginia bird cherry. They're not used so much anymore, but North Dakota sure is proud of them! If you do happen to get your hands on some, try this chokecherry jelly recipe!
OHIO
Ohio's official state fruit is the tomato and their official state beverage is tomato juice! Before the 1800s, tomatoes weren't very widely used, but Ohio played a large part in their popularization.
OKLAHOMA
Oklahama apparently could not decide on a state meal so they have several: Barbecued pork, chicken fried steak, sausages and gravy, fried okra, and grits. Their state treat is cornbread, and their state dessert is pecan pie. These foods alone are the makings of a delicious Oklahoma-style restaurant!
PENNSYLVANIA
Pennylvania doesn't have any official state foods, but they sure do have good food! We love a good Philly cheesesteak sandwich and would proudly nominate them for the state meal or sandwich! Although you can get copycat Philly cheesesteak sandwiches pretty much anywhere in the USA, there's nothing like enjoying an authentic one when in Pennsylvania. RHODE ISLAND
The official state drink of Rhode Island is coffee milk. If you live in any other state, you'd have to make it at home. But you can find it in Rhode Island in the dairy section of supermarkets as well as on diner menus.
SOUTH CAROLINA
While South Carolina is known for hearty southern foods, their state foods sound like the beginnings of a health food store inventory. Their state snack food is boiled peanuts and their state vegetable is collard greens!
