What’s the weirdest game you’ve ever seen in Sanford Stadium in your lifetime?
I was born in ’88, so my real memory of UGA football kicks in during the mid-90s. For me, the strangest game I’ve ever personally witnessed in Sanford was the 2006 Tennessee game. We jumped out to a 24-7 lead, momentum was fully on our side. Mikey Henderson took a punt to the house, and Brannan Sutherland was bulldozing folks left and right (man, I kinda miss having a fullback in this offense).
But then it all just… unraveled. Tennessee scored 51 points—51!—and ended up beating us 51-33. Erik Ainge looked like Peyton Manning reincarnated in the second half, and our defense completely collapsed. I remember thinking it felt like two completely different games happened in the same night. Still to this day, I don’t know how we lost that one by 18 points after starting like that.
So what about y’all?……what’s the weirdest, most head-scratching game you’ve ever seen live in Sanford?
Win or loss.
