Larranaga HC at Miami stepping down

The teams he had 2-3 years ago looked like they were going to be unstoppable fueled by NIL money…but his age and the demands upon coaches now, NIL money everywhere, the ACC no longer being the brand it was…it’s come apart despite having young talent.

Swartz their freshman SG was heavily recruited by UGA last year.

“That magical ride to the Final Four, following an Elite Eight run the previous year, should have catapulted the Miami program to national prominence. But Larranaga was unable to continue building on that success, due in part to a rash of injuries and the explosion of the transfer portal, which requires coaches to essentially recruit new rosters every season. The Hurricanes’ 2023-24 season began with a Final Four banner-raising ceremony, a No. 13 preseason national ranking, and high expectations. Their season ended with a 10-game losing thud, and without an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. The Canes wound up with a losing record (15-17) and finished second-to-last in 14th place in the ACC.

The other three 2023 Final Four teams (UConn, FAU, San Diego State) returned to the Big Dance. The UConn Huskies won the title again. Asked at the end of last season why the team slid so far, Larranaga said: “Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller graduated. The game comes down to players. Last year we needed a bucket, I went right to Isaiah or Jordan, one of those two guys, and invariably they would deliver. We don’t really have that this year. Haven’t all season long.” Although several players were expected to take on the roles of Wong and Miller, none did. The coach explained how injuries to Pack, Poplar and Omier kept the team from reaching its full potential and how the team’s collective confidence and chemistry was affected once the losing streak got going.

That team fell apart last spring, as rosters all over the nation were decimated by the transfer portal as NIL money grew. The ACC had 104 players bolt, including eight from Miami. Omier left for Baylor, Poplar for Villanova and Bensley Joseph for Providence. Jakai Robinson and Favour Aire went to Bryant, Christian Watson to Southern Miss, AJ Casey to Saint Lous and Michael Nwoko to Mississippi State. Freshman Kyshawn George was picked No. 24 in the NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. Pack is the only remaining player from UM’s 2023 Final Four team and, once again, is being hampered by an injury. This time, it’s a right ankle injury and the timeline for his return is unknown, according to the team trainer.

Larranaga did recruit one of the program’s most talented freshman classes with Jalil Bethea, Austin Swartz and Divine Ugochukwu. All three have shown flashes of their potential. Bethea, a five-star recruit from Philadelphia, came off the bench and gave UM a spark against Mount St. Mary’s. He finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes. After the game, asked about the team’s morale heading into the holiday break, Bethea said: “The only thing we’re focusing on is January 1, our next game.” The Hurricanes play at Boston College on New Year’s Day. They will have a new coach. Larranaga’s danced his last dance.”

Lies, damn lies and Net Points Per Drive

I came across this the other day. Calculates many statistics but focus on Net point per drive measured as Offensive PPD - Defensive PPD with some exceptions (end of half/game, etc.). Since 2007, only one National Champion has finished outside the top 10 (Auburn 2010 at #13) in this statistic. We were #1 in 2021 and 2022 & #3 in 2017 and 2023. There is no information on where the eventual champion was prior to the post season, but we are currently sitting at #24. I don't know if this means a thing right now, but if we win it all this year, it was by the skin of our teeth.

Of note the 2021 defense gave up 0.69 points per drive, only eclipsed by the 2011 Bama defense that gave up 0.49.

Just want to give a shoutout of appreciation…

To @LanceMcCurley

I hate that you had to live through that moment of terror, but what a blessing it is to be able to share the story of the young man from Mobile, AL. What a terrifying moment it must have been to hear those shots ring out, not even knowing of the carnage that POS left behind.

Not only to have lived through that nightmare but to meet one of the young man’s family member through happenstance. I just can’t help but think it’s all apart of God’s will and just a testimony to His grace. My sister is currently working on her masters and could have easily been caught up in the chaos and violence and I’m so very thankful to God that it wasn’t the case. Thank you @LanceMcCurley for sharing your story with Miles Garrett for all to hear and God bless all the victims and families involved. Go Dawgs and Happy New Year to everyone!

Ball on the 1 yard line … and you put your QB in the Shotgun …

… and THEN he turns around and pitches the ball back another 4-5 yards to the 9 yard line. I’ll never understand just giving the Defense 9 yards like that when you’re near the goal line. That kind of ignorance 100% deserves to lose the damn game. Just Stupid - Junior High Coaching knows not to do that.

Win, Lose , Or Draw what a great time to be a Bulldawg!

Been slow today at work so been perusing the internet talking heads previewing the Sugar Bowl. A couple of common themes I've been seeing.

First there is a lot of mentioning about this game being program defining for nd and how a win over Georgia could propel them to sustained success blah blah blah etc. It got me to thinking how many times have I heard that over the last few years. It feels so good to be the standard bearer, the icon if you will (for the wrestling fans out there) for college football. We are everybody's target and I love it.

Second almost all of the ones I saw today mentioned this Georgia team isn't the big baddy of past Georgia teams. They say we are capable of beating anybody but not quite the same. Now I don't argue this point but my point , about how good we have it right now, is that even in our "down year" we still won the freaking SEC Championship! Even with the so called new addition blue bloods.

Simply put. These are the good ole days. Enjoy them my fellow dawgs.
