Border

Never forget that the Republican Party hates its own voters as much as the dems do. The only difference between the Republican and Democrat party is one party loves Israel more than it loves Ukraine and vice versa

And that’s the only difference you see?

As far as political philosophy? Yes.

In practice the Dems take way better care of its voter base than republicans do theirs. But that is in part due to Republicans despising their base.
Wow for once we actually agree on something.

this bill proves either:

a) feds control the border already but choose to not act according to law

b) feds have no control over the border and they believe they could control it because of this new collection of papers would allow them the power to act with new acts written down that are sort of written differently but is the same as current law.

The bill tightens up asylum laws allowing faster processing and deportation of asylum seekers. I thought that's what the GOP wanted

Of course it is a bill giving away something, we don't know about that is written by think tanks and lobbyists that nobody reads. We are better off hoping that DC doesn't approve any more bills this year to "help" us...

No bill is needed. Just enforcement of current law, with Obiden refuses to do. To wit:

Okay.

Just close the border and instruct proposed immigrants to go to a legal port of entry. That would fix the problem for little to no extra money, correct?
pretty sure that by law they can't currently just do that. This bill has mechanism that allows it...

Because there are laws for asylum seekers we have to follow. Asylum seekers aren't illegal immigrants, a totally different issue and the reason for the crisis at the border

"Unlike the refugee system, where individuals have to apply for admission outside of the country, under the asylum system individuals can only request asylum when they are physically present in the United States.

U.S. law is clear in that any person can claim asylum regardless of how they arrive in the country. But several administrations, including Biden's, have tried to limit the circumstances under which asylum seekers can make their claims. The current process is overburdened. There are more than 920,000 applications for asylum pending before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services."

If you want border security and changes to the overburdened asylum system the bill coming out of the Senate is the best bill we will see ever come out of Congress.

ever is a long time, but Democrats are certainly incentivized to make a deal right now given political factors

similarly, it's a pretty big gamble for hardliners on the right to block this bill, especially since they need persuadables

Gonna be a hard sell that we are facing an invasion after independents and suburbanites watch them tank this

(if they can, will be interesting to watch)

How could this country exist, for about 250 years, with no ability of the President/government to secure the border without some 2024 legislation? Anyone who believes this, should turnoff MSNBC and CNN and think for themselves. Biden could order it secured now, and help Texas put up more razor wire. But Biden and Senate have turned this into a DC political pile of shet.

Biden is not king.

He is the President. How come the border hasn't been this porous for centuries without a King? Was Obama a King? He deported over 3 million illegals.

Can you think for yourself at all?
sure.

I can even read the bill all on my own.

most everyone who didn't wake up to politics during the Trump era knows that the border/immigration has been problematic for over a decade because lawmakers can't get their shit together - in part because immigration is a useful cudgel on the right, as they depend on xenophobes for part of their base.

fortunately, the same people are easily amused by the expert prat falls of their leadership

So can you explain how Obama deported millions out of the country without needing lawmakers?

Allows 5,000 a day right ?
No, here’s the deal:

“DHS could close the border if Border Patrol encountered 4,000 or more migrants on average over seven days. The border would have to be shut down if those encounters reached a seven-day average of 5,000 or if they exceeded 8,500 in a single day.

The border couldn’t be shut down under this authority for more than 270 days in the first year. And the bill would give the president the power to suspend a border closure “on an emergency basis for up to 45 days if it is in the national interest.”

During an emergency closure, Border Patrol would still need to process a minimum of 1,400 migrants who try to enter the U.S. legally through ports of entry. Only unaccompanied minors would be able to cross between ports of entry. And any migrant who tried to cross illegally two or more times during a border emergency would be barred from the U.S. for a year.”

Oh wow what a great deal.

The best part is we almost get as much money as Israel and Gaza and almost 1/3 of the money the Ukraine gets. Our leaders really care about us.

No thanks

I’m good with playing the long game

The border policy of this administration has been an absolute disaster and clusterfvck of Afghan withdraw proportion

If it can be used to get those out, I’ll bite the bullet and hope for a better plan down the road

Now if a stand alone bill gets brought to the table I’d sit back Down and hammer one out, election time or not

The only difference the bill makes is allowing Biden to claim his actions are legal. Illegals would continue to pour over the border

Yeah I wasn't sure what time frame to put for here but has to be at least 5 years before a bill as good as this has a chance of passing.
