Given both Athens and your well established political leanings, you’ll have to pardon me if I took your comment as a partisan jab. The comment you were replying to most certainly was.

While I agree that the country would benefit from more independent thinking, I’ll stand by my observation that one party has a significantly bigger problem than the other with blindly consuming political nerratives deeply divorced from reality. Smith is going to force rational people to acknowledge that J6 wasn’t about the people in the Capitol and in fact the day of J6 was only one component of the overall plan by Trump and team to steal the election. Plausible deniability regarding Trump’s intent will be stripped away.

So then you can make the moral choice to still support the guy who lives in opposition to our most sacred values as a country, or not. But you’ll no longer be able to rationalize that Trump really isn’t that bad and is just a hard nosed business man who doesn’t understand politics. He is a cancer who if he regains power will do everything possible (both legal and illegal) to maintain that power, just like the despots and dictators he admires so much.

I see where you would think that because the title of the thread, and PineTree1's first post are about Newsom becoming a candidate. He's certainly already campaigning and seems ready to enter the race at any time. He's got a war chest from his re-election campaign, which he hardly used.

What I caught onto was a subsequent comment about how the media can quickly reshape and repackage a candidate. Case in point: I mentioned in the first paragraph that Newsom easily won his re-election, despite some pretty awful things in his state. There was the recall. A poll showed that 70% of California residents seriously considered moving out of state. There was a shortage of U-Haul trucks. Five counties voted not to be part of California anymore. I could go on for quite a while. At the end of the day, Gavin Newsom and his hair gel pulled in 63% of the vote, running against a doorstop.

Most people don't follow politics too much. Don't blame them, its depressing. They like their news in predigested sound bytes. Slogans and the label of the day win over thoughtful consideration. Nobody looks at the details. Confirmation bias is real and powerful. Same for recency bias.
