He was in bad shape politically and the country was a dumpster fire,, but I still believe had that rescue been successful he'd have been re-elected. It was his one last chance to pull a rabbit out of the hat, but he'd decimated the military and intelligence community and it bit him on the butt. No way to ever know, just my opinion.
The less said about Operation Eagle Claw on this message board, the better. The Delta Force commander on the ground was a former UGA football player.

It was a failed mission, no one is faulting the brave men that took part in the operation. It changed the way spec ops were done because of the trouble with the pilots. They went to a system of special force pilots following that mission. It was a progression of learning from their mistakes.
The special forces were cut back after Vietnam and were crippled under carter. They really got a boost when Reagan came into the office and rebuilt the military and realized the value of what the spec op teams could do.
The colonel who commanded Delta Force is a fine man who had an outstanding service record in the Army. He actually was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but turned it down to accept a Regular Army commission.
