Can we also exempt lawyers from paying taxes? Or just lawyers over 50 who are sick of paying taxes?Trophy goes brrrrrrrrrrr
Or how about a lifetime tax payment cap? After you pay collectively $200,000 in state income tax, you are good for life.

Here, let's put some faces to those who sponsored this "masterful" piece of legislation:I mean, let's be honest...this is bullshit. I don't care what "advantage" it may give UGA. I don't support this.
Why don’t they pas a bill to exempt Georgia citizens from paying the sate tax.
Listen, if that’s Ben Watson, I’m Diana Ross.Ben Watson

Ridiculous! So an 18-22 yr old doesnt pay state taxes but the rest of us do. Who is running this crap show
Every little bit helps.Did we miss on recruits because of State income tax? Doubtful.
I don't know, we don't want to create locker room issues.Every little bit helps.
It would benefit athletes who are residents of GA. Players who are residents of states with state income tax will have to pay tax in their home state.I'm guessing it's driven by trying to compete with the Texas, Tennessee, Florida, etc. schools.
Then exempt ALL OF US from the state income tax. People pay state tax in the state of their residence. A player from GA playing at Tenn will pay state income tax in GA but under this he or she won’t. Is it even constitutional?Exactly, it puts us on an equal footing with those states.
Yes it is. Along with Fla, TX, AZ, NV, WA. Also, you pay state income tax in which you are a resident.Well in those cases there is no state income that for anyone…a little different don’t you think? Isn’t Tennessee also a no state income tax state?
This is stupid. Are we trying to teach these kids to be MORE entitled?
I guess I’m missing your point. UGA recruits against states with no state income tax. Why is it a bad thing for college athletes to be exempt from state income taxes on NIL? It’s not going crush the state budget. It allows us to be on a level playing field in recruiting. Athletes have always received preferential treatment, so why would state income taxes exemptions be any different? It helps us compete apples to apples with TAMU, Texas, FSU, UF, Miami, and UTK.Well in those cases there is no state income that for anyone…a little different don’t you think? Isn’t Tennessee also a no state income tax state?
Yep. I’m thinking it’s just NIL they receive from the school that won’t be taxed, NIL $ thru advertising and other brand deals will still be taxed I’m assuming. Could be wrong on that.I guess I’m missing your point. UGA recruits against states with no state income tax. Why is it a bad thing for college athletes to be exempt from state income taxes on NIL? They will have to pay taxes, just not the state income tax.I get it this will help. I get it many don't make much at all and it's good for them. I also am irritated as a father of 3 kids working his ass off to battle inflation and you have guys making half a million who don't have to pay taxes on it. But they also can do things I can't on a football field so there's that!
Only way to compete with Florida and Tennessee that already do not charge state income tax to anyone. Welcome to the free state of Florida!
Definitely would never live in Florida. That state is f@cked, they just haven't come to terms with it yet. For one, home insurance is about to go poof.Only way to compete with Florida and Tennessee that already do not charge state income tax to anyone. Welcome to the free state of Florida!
Time to call in Elon to fix the GA State House.Ridiculous! So an 18-22 yr old doesnt pay state taxes but the rest of us do. Who is running this crap show
Lol, Florida and Georgia collect almost the same amount of tax revenue per resident. Using a sales tax instead of income tax just shifts more of the tax burden to people who have to spend all of their money on goods and services. This burden can be cancelled out (fully or partially) by things like property tax if set up correctly.Taxing goods and services and not income can be a hard concept for some to understand…
Giving tax credits to attract movies which bring 200+ people to the state for multiple months is a bit different from letting guys play football here completely tax free. Who knows what the actual number that UGA spent on NIL deals last year, but say it was $20M… that is over $1M that should be going to the state in tax revenue. I don’t think most Georgians would be fine with them making the same deal with MLB & NFL players so I fail to see why it’s okay just because they play college football. It’s akin to movies being granted tax credits and corporations for doing business here. I make more $ than many (not claydawg I don’t think) and don’t agree with this at all but I understand the angle as it’s already happening just not at the individual person level. I wonder, however, does it then translate to pro athlete endorsement deals as well? I can only assume it does. Will be interesting to see if doctors try to angle that it’s their name, image, and likeness that drives the revenue to their practices.
I’m not a taxpayer in the state of Georgia so not my fight to fight. But as much as I love and support Georgia athletics I wouldn’t be happy that this is the focus of the legislature. If they exempt college athletes do you really not think other groups will start to pressure them to do the same? What about the teacher’s union? First responders? I think a better step to take would be to eliminate state income tax for all.I guess I’m missing your point. UGA recruits against states with no state income tax. Not disagreeing with you here, but that won't ever happen & I definitely don't see how a GA bill to exempt college athletes from paying a state income tax has anything to do with what should or shouldn't be done with the federal income tax. This is further justifying that there should be no income taxes at all. A national sales tax would be the most effective and most FAIR tax.
Like the saying goes.....Dreams are free. But, I do think Georgia should do away with state income taxes for ALL....not just college athletes. I highly doubt this passes in the state legislature. I'm as conservative as they come, but I've already written to my state congressman voicing my objection to this. Not disagreeing with you here, but that won't ever happen & I definitely don't see how a GA bill to exempt college athletes from paying a state income tax has anything to do with what should or shouldn't be done with the federal income tax.
Other groups can pursue it, but I don’t think they would have success. This is just leveling the playing field.I’m not a taxpayer in the state of Georgia so not my fight to fight. They can pay their fair share also. I love Georgia but these players make in the top percent of people in this state. They can afford the 5% everyone else pays. They wanna talk about lowering taxes across the board I'm all ears. And if we miss on a few guys because of this oh well.Yep. I’m thinking it’s just NIL they receive from the school that won’t be taxed, NIL $ thru advertising and other brand deals will still be taxed I’m assuming. Could be wrong on that.
I get why some ppl are against this, hell I don’t like paying taxes either lol but if 105 guys on the team everyone here is rooting for is catching a break… there’s worse things in the world. Now, if I’m a UF, AU, Bama, Tenn fan living in GA then I’m pissed😂
Take it to Dawgchat. A national sales tax hits the poorest the hardest. So your post belongs in the political realm, not the Dawgvent. This is further justifying that there should be no income taxes at all. A national sales tax would be the most effective and most FAIR tax.
It is on the DC. And.....the wealthy are spending more money therefore would be paying more taxes. The drug dealers, illegal aliens, etc....all buying stuff, and they would be paying taxes with every purchase they make.Take it to Dawgchat. A national sales tax hits the poorest the hardest. So stupid. The wealthy can very obviously afford more sales taxes than the poor. I am not wealthy, but am retired and have enough to do what I want. Sales tax is a poor tax. Ditto the lottery. JFC.It is on the DC. And.....the wealthy are spending more money therefore would be paying more taxes. You must be one of them there attorneys or accountants.

No state tax on tips would be nice. No state tax at all even better. Why don’t they pas a bill to exempt Georgia citizens from paying the sate tax.
Totally agree.I mean, let's be honest...this is bullshit. I don't care what "advantage" it may give UGA. I don't support this.
I don't think this is true. I've traveled for work for most of my career, and I've always had to file state returns for the states I was working in at the time. One year I had to file seven state and three local income tax returns. It would benefit athletes who are residents of GA. Players who are residents of states with state income tax will have to pay tax in their home state.
It is ridiculous to exempt 18-22 yr old college athletes who are being paid thousands to play a game while their education, medical, dental, tutoring, meals, laptops are paid. Blue collars, teachers, firefighters, law enforcement, and the rest of us who bust our tails are expected to pay state tax while paying our children’s tuition, tutoring, medical, dental. Exempting athletes is a bad idea.
1) this is no advantage as Texas, Florida, Tennessee and several other states already have no state income tax. So this allows us to match them, not beat them.
This is true. Many employers capture & report by state, and if they do you’ve gotta pay & file a return. In theory, if/when the players become employees, the employer would need to treat them like pro athletes and designate earnings in each state they “work” by playing a game(s).I don't think this is true. I've traveled for work for most of my career, and I've always had to file state returns for the states I was working in at the time.
