BUT why and how is it legal for Trump admin to take away income based replayment plan applications when they were put in place by congressional vote. The problem is they are not necessarily taking away the plan itself but have taken down the recertification application from the website that will result in people being taken off the plan. Pretty terrible idea that will not end well for him if he does continue to shit on student loan payers.

You can ask “why and how is it legal” about quite a bit of the DOGE cuts, legislating by EO, etc. The Courts have answered - it’s not.
You seem to support it all unconditionally, until it hurts you.

This does not affect me boss. But it will cause a depression.

Unfortunately it's what the last several administrations have done. EO and let the courts decide if it's legal. Student loan debt, eviction moratorium, etc...

Is this related to the illegal canceling of student loans ?

The President will be found eventually to have no legal authority to curtail or end most of these programs. Just a matter of time.

And any Republican supporting it should remember that the next president takes office in 45 months. Not that long. We should all try to get along and do what’s right

Could be right, but student loans should be treated just like any other loan imo. Nothing is free and I didn’t sign up for someone else’s debt.

I'm not sure about the legality of it, but I do have a problem with the administration reneging on a program put in place by a previous administration. A better approach would have been to stop the program moving forward, but it is bad business and immoral to pull the rug out from under federal employees who were banking on their student loans being paid off based on previous promises.

Agree for the most part. But to me - the issue on some of these income driven loans is that you could pay as low as $0 per month if your income is low enough.

Some of these loans will never get repaid….a big issue FWIS.

I was referring to a program in which some federal employees were told their student loans would be paid off if they worked for the federal government for a specific period (ten years?) I view that as an employment perk (an unwise perk, but a perk nonetheless). Income-based student loan cancellations that the Biden administration participated in I was totally against. I think I misread/misunderstood the OP's post.

Get it and was mostly agreeing with you. It’s those that have abused the system is what I don’t agree with.

I certainly know we need teachers.

What’s really neat about the constitution is now matter how left wing the idea is turns out our founding fathers would have been for it!

Supreme Court said Biden's agenda wasn't legal (see below). Trump stopped Biden's end around. I'm 1 year away from having paid for 5 kids and their bachelor degrees. Now I have 1 MBA, 1 doctor, 2 teachers (with masters), and 1 business owner. I sacrificed to pay for 5 kids in college because I knew it wasn't your responsibility to put my kids through school. Your college loan is yours and Biden had no right to tell me to pay for a 6th kid. Trump is well within *our* legal rights to stop this.

Congrats - 5 is tough, just got two paid off this past year.

Me, I worked my way through. Didn’t get a dime from anyone.

Ditto. I was in school 89-93. I worked washing cars, raking leaves, mowing, rebuilding alternators, and many other odd/end jobs. I did all that just to survive tuition and to eat. I promised myself back then that my kids would not pay their tuition. They worked and was responsible for their own spending money but no school. I did it and I am proud of that. Good for you too. In 1 more year, my college debt will be paid. I've been paying some university for the last 10 years. Thanks Eastman

I think if you work for it you will appreciate it more and that’s something nobody can take away from you.

The world would be great if everything was free. But it ain’t, no free rides. If you are physically and mentally able to take care yourself - you’re on your own, responsible for yourself, the way it should be.

Take your tin cup and beg on another corner, it’s not a good look.

My wife had student loans and heard many talking about the forgiveness program. So I searched and searched learning all I could about it. I called and talked to many people and never could get a straight answer. So we set out a plan ourself and paid those suckers off. Felt that was the best way to handle and not be at the governments mercy.

It's not right, and is an unconstitutional overreach by the Executive Department, and an attempt to usurp the Legislative authority of Congress by Presidential fiat. If challenged, it won't stand.

When I went to school, I had to get a bank loan. Not FAFSA. The banker would look you over while he was talking to your dad. I still remember the grey haired gentleman. At the end of the day, I’m not sure my dad didn’t bet his house on me. I can’t be sure now. Look, the current system is a mess. Kids with sociology degrees from an Ivy League school racking up $250,000 in loans for a job that pays $30,000 a year get the headlines. The average student just wants a reasonable degree that they can turn into a career. There is no doubt in my mind that the loan system feeds the increases in college tuition. My daughter’s school increased about $3000 per year. The college system is incredibly broken and can be unfair. I don’t mind forgiving some of the debt of successful graduates. And ithink the government should get out of the school loan business. They’re bad at it.

Disclaimer, I paid off my school loans myself by saving every other paycheck in the top drawer of my dresser. I lived at home during that time. But you might as well be talking about the 1930s when you could buy a nice house for $12,000 so different was the value of money.
