on home repair. Found a contractor, none of this nonsense of 50% down before start, started the next day - 5-star rating, in business over 30 years and had general liability & workman's comp proof.

1) mailing the check - didn't want to use a credit card because of 3.5% fees.
2) 3 south of the border guys, didn't "axe" 4 a green card - family & I unharmed and still alive.
3) excellent job, fair price, no issues with cleanup. will use them again if need arises.

Moral of the story - don't risk the 50% payment to start a job. besides, it's just not a good business decision. no reason to help fund a business to keep their doors opened. that is their risk when they signed up, not yours.

“no reason to help fund a business to keep their doors opened”

Tell me you’ve never worked in construction without telling me you’ve never worked in construction…

What about the clients that I don’t get a deposit from then we start and they change their mind on things… Maybe even possibly I bought some materials that aren’t returnable once it’s opened… Things like that are why we get a deposit, not to keep the lights on bruhhh…

If I’m doing a smaller job, say less than $5-$10k, then I don’t care… but any higher end job with picky cheapo clients and/or special order plants, stone, etc., then you better believe it’s more of an issue… again most good customers read the service agreement that they’ve signed and have us a deposit check within a few days of starting work no questions asked…

Congrats on your successful project!

As i said before, if it works for you, do it - can’t blame you, you’re reducing your risk. Your business, run it any way you want.

But not a chance in hayul I’m taking on that risk as a customer. Too many other good contractors out there that do not require it.

In your above scenario - the most I would do is buy the product and have it delivered to my house - my possession. In most all cases, that is not 50% of the job cost.

Got to have an agreement, references, permit, workman’ s comp and general liability. Otherwise, wouldn’t waste my time.

Nobody’s “cheapo” here, at least not me if that is what you are insinuating. Just looking for the best value while doing my due diligence.

There is always a risk involved in most all businesses. It’s called “the cost of doing business”. Have ran enough of businesses to know.

“Worked in construction” ?

No, but it doesn’t take rocket science to figure something out as basic as any of this.

Just giving you a different perspective… there’s just as many bad customers out there as there are bad contractors in my experience… I respect your due diligence… I always tell my potential customers to get 2-3 quotes… and that I don’t want to be the low guy… my wife is getting kitchen renovations estimates right now and I believe Frugal Kitchens, etc all have 50% deposits… anyway, enjoy the banter… woof…
I've never worked in construction
Bet both y’all got soft girly hands too…

The whole discussion started out as a question about contractors in other areas. I was curious, that was it.

But you came out of nowhere like a bull in a china shop accusing some of being “cheapos” and being “a bunch of cheap asses”.

Relax dude, no one was talking about you, it was a general question. I know what the other side’s arguments are. Hence, my response:

In your above scenario - the most I would do is buy the product and have it delivered to my house.”

Told you now 3 times already, “if it works for you, do it”.

If you are trying make a point, your intelligence is showing. May be a good idea to move on, can’t imagine any of this helping your business.

HA! ….”banter”? …Obviously, you’re in a different league. You ain’t seen nothing yet sugarbritches.

soft girly hands”??…I wish, calloused hands from years of using free weights.
