Insider Note Few notes

I’ve chatted with a few folks this morning and developed some thoughts worth sharing.

TEAM LEADERSHIP
We spent months trying to discover this team’s identity. The extension of that was identifying team leaders. Many people, Kirby Smart included, raved about Trevor Etienne being a team leader back in the summer. Team magic happens when your best players are also your hardest workers and team leaders.
Those summer reports were red flags to me. How can a guy who has been here for three months usurp leadership roles from fourth and fifth year players? It was a red flag back in August. It isn’t in December. Etienne caped up through injured ribs to stand in front of his team and say: ‘I’m at Georgia for games like this.’ And yes, it’s noted that the Florida transfer proudly said he’d never played in championships.
A freshman or transfer in August is a veteran on a team in December. Georgia needed energy and leadership because of energy and leadership voids. I asked who team leaders were back in August. Now in December, I can confidently report names including Tate Ratledge, Jalon Walker, Malaki Starks, Dan Jackson, Chaz Chambliss, Arian Smith…and Trevor Etienne.

ARIAN SMITH
Yes, I included him in that list even after more dropped passes. With each dropped pass, I hear Mike in East Dublin (my daddy) yell: “surely they have somebody else who can catch the dang ball!!”
They do have other receivers, but not ones who do what Arian Smith does all over the field.
-Chasing plays to be in position to fall on fumbles
-Perimeter blocking
-Taking on LBs in run blocking
-Punt fake ball carrier
-Special teams gunner
-And, oh yeah, he is the team’s leading receiver
Want to play for Kirby Smart? Be versatile. Arian Smith went from a track star to key piece to a SEC Championship team. Keep cursing the drops, but note the other contributions too.

GUNNER TIME
Georgia enters the playoff shifting the offensive identity it had just refined. Gunner Stockton gives Mike Bobo a power running threat at QB. Any team willing to run a QB must also be willing to play the backup QBs should injuries warrant it. We saw a version of this in OT when Stockton’s helmet flew into Roswell.
Yes, Gunner Stockton is QB1 in Carson Beck’s absence. That also requires Georgia investing more to have Ryan Puglisi and Jaden Rashada ready for action. I expect them all to take snaps with the 1’s in practice. I expect offensive reads to be simplified so any of them can play. I also don’t trust the depth chart order from last Saturday. One person told me this morning to not be surprised if Rashada is in line for meaningful snaps.

NOLA
I freaking love New Orleans. Kirby Smart said his kids feel like they are raised there. Somebody tossed this idea out to me this morning: it is an advantage for Georgia to know it is in NOLA on New Year’s Day. Georgia fans can gobble up the accommodations and secondary market tickets. Notre Dame and Indiana fans won’t even look at those prices until they know they have reason to go. Georgia fans can make it a home game in the Bayou. While we all know the CFP should adjust and make the top-4 seeds have home games, taking over NOLA is the next best thing.

In this thread we add all the bammer tears…. (more added 12/9/24)

I’ll start,

“College football is doomed!

That is the stupidest most idiotic committee I’ve ever seen in my life. You put SMU as a seed above the team that just beat them. How stupid can you be? The fact that they put Arizona State, SMU, Boise State in there at all over Alabama, Ole Miss, South Carolina is an absolute slap in the face to the SEC. I don’t know if there’s anything that you can do, but if there was, I’d do it. Since winds don’t mean anything, ALABAMA needs to find the bottom of the barrel teams for next year And tell the committee you wanted wins we’re gonna give you wins. We’re gonna beat one of my hundred to nothing if I have to keep every starter, I got in the whole game. And in case you’re wondering, I cannot stand booger McFarland. He is the biggest hater of them all. Sickening. Once again, George has probably been handed a national title.“

"The playoffs is not about best teams anymore. It's about making everyone included. So advantage Notre Dame who can not play in a conference and schedule a soft schedule and make the playoffs. It is about weak conference's getting 1st round byes with weak schedules.

Only Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio State actually have a shot at the natty. Penn State and Notre Dame are long shot if I am lucky maybe's.

SMU, Clemson, Boise State, Arizona State, Indiana do not even belong in the field. JMO"

"and the Committee caved. Lesson is conferences can sneak undeserving teams in with championship games. SMU will get smoked in 1st round"

"Where’s Updyke when you need him?"

"SMU, Boise and ASU got “Participation Trophies!” All had SOS in the 60s +!!!!!! El Toro poo-poo for some on the committee to say “SOS matters!” It may but ultimately “not ALL that much!!!” 🤬🤬🤬

RTR"

"I want a bowl where we’re paired with the worst 6-6 team out there. If it’s the Weedeater Bowl, Pop Tarts Bowl, no matter.

All that matters is beating the living hell out of a weaker team, playoff eligibility-style."

"I won’t be contributing to the ratings for this year’s CFB playoffs. The Committee succumbed to all the public pressure of putting SMU in."

"from borderline playoff to embarassing Group of 6 bowl as Citrus took SC. worst end since 2007. that and likely get Miami in Jacksonville in Gator or RellaQuest im Tampa. id skip bowl with that outcome"

"If I even remotely thought that we had the 12 best teams, this would not upset me near as bad. The college football world is so screwed up. I am tempted to never watch another game."

"These are definitely not the 12 best and anyone who says it knows it’s not true. But the rules don’t call for the 12 best. We have to reward everyone now and pretend we’re all similar competitively."

"Here is the answer. Bama needs to leave the SEC while they still have a brand name like ND. Play no one, and give themselves a much better chance at the playoffs. With where Bama ranks in NIL, this is only going to become even more painfully apparent than ever."

"I said in an earlier post, college football is losing importance more and more every year now in my life. It’s sad, but the game is just changing to a point where I am losing more interest everyday. I wouldn’t be surprised if I stop watching college football altogether next year, or soon after. I am sure I won’t watch one more college football game this year. At least I have Bama BB to still watch this year."

(on whether or not UGA deserved a 2 seed)
"They’ve just chilled in the East for a long time. They didn’t deserve anything. They had to play a real schedule like the rest of us."

"Dodgers!...

I know there’s a bunch of butt hurt Tide fans ( I’m one of them.) out there right now, suffering illegal mopery about the decline of the Bama dynasty…. just wanted to extend a hearty welcome to come over to the Dark Side of the MLB…. Where there is plenty of money ( just signed Blake Snell!) a bright future ( faked the Mets into signing Juan Soto! )and great home baked cookies from Mrs. Ohtani. 😂"

"How did we go from the cusps of the CFP to an unranked opponent? Was the committee trolling us all along?"

"Great question… I don’t want to come across as a conspiracy theorist… so here it goes :

in the back of my mind I thought the college football committee was using Alabama to create debate and interest in their proceedings. Then I started to believe what they and others were saying.

I drank the koolaid.

It appears that was the CFP’s intent the entire time . Get a polarizing team in there like Alabama to create debate but without any evidence to support it, kick them to the curb when the job was done at last minute.

And the head of the committee is none other than Michigan’s AD who we are playing.

I’ll watch the game and bama will prob play like dogshit. Unfortunate"

"Eh. I’ve spent countless time and money traveling and supporting the team over the years. Been to nearly every sec stadium. Been to the sec championship twice. Been to several bowl games.

Forgive me if I have little interest in supporting what’s clearly a bunch of overpaid millionaire players and coaches while they give the same lackadaisical effort and undisciplined play that they’ve shown all year. Particularly against a middling big 10 school.

My interest in this years team and this bowl game are at rock bottom. Hopefully next years team will restore some pride in the program.

And by the way, it has nothing to do with wins and losses. A 4-win team can play with pride in performance. This team just clearly doesnt care, so neither do I."

"I agree Bama is screwed IMO! Mainly because of this bullshit woke/DEI world we live in and how that cancer has spread to CFB! They don't give a shit about history and blue bloods! That's why they give free F'n passes to Boise State, weak ass Indiana, and others that don't even schedule a TOP 25 team!"

"At best SMU would have probably won 5-6 games if in the SEC. Fact-The ACC's best team Clemson Got Dog Stumped by the Best team In the SEC. Yes, the Committee has been put in a difficult situation but.....Regardless of the Bama Hate right now, if ESPN, of which is broadcasting all the games but one want Bama in over SMU, we are in."

"Total BS. What would Bama’s record be if we played SMU’s schedule and vice-versa? The auto bids need to go and the byes need to be done differently. Two teams ranked below Bama got in…in what world does that make sense? Boise State and Arizona State are in and get byes??? What a joke! I hope SMU, Boise State and ASU get splattered like Georgia did to TCU. The ACC and Big 12 are G5 conferences now."

"Vandy would have beaten SMU by two touchdowns!! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 Boise also!!!

RTR"

"The Committee took the easy way out. There would have been a world of condemnation by all of the DEI people for letting BAMA in. Equal Outcomes. In the old Playoff world, SMU, Clemson, Boise State, and Arizona State wouldn't have even been considered for the Playoffs."

I had a little more time to read/add some tears... enjoy.

We got a great draw for the CFP

All the teams that can match (or at least come close) our talent level are on the other side. OSU, Texas, Oregon, and to a lesser degree Tennessee and Clemson have the most NFL talent. On our side, ND and PSU are the closest teams to UGA in terms of talent and I wouldn't put either of them over Tennessee or Clemson. Indiana, Boise, and SMU have a few good players but would get steamrolled by UGA on both lines of scrimmage. I REALLY like our chances to get back to Atlanta.

Beck has way better arm and accuracy over Gunner but…

I can’t help to think that with THIS UGA offense Gunner might be able to help us win in more ways than Beck can.

We have good TEs and a great backfield if we are healthy. Having a QB that can run using his legs will help open the run game for ETN & Frazier. Play good defense and be scrappy on offense, we fixing to win this damn thing.

Go DAWGS!

Georgia High School Football better than Texas High School Football

Like everything in that ugly assed state, their high school football is overrated. There are 184 NFL players from Texas; there are 146 from Georgia. There are 31 million people in the state of Texas; there are 11 million people in Georgia. Georgia produces more NFL players per capita than any other state. Georgia HS football is better talent producer than Texas and it ain’t close.

We have 3.5 weeks to turn...

Gunner into Jake Fromm 2.0 and turn our offense into a run first mindset. We don't need him to throw for 300, just 175 and no turnovers. We need Gunner to pick up 3 critical first downs next game with his arm. At this point I'd flex out Luckie and Delp and throw to them instead of our wideouts. I'd also spend time installing some type of qb counter and qb run other than the one draw that we have, and expand our boot/sprint pass game. We have to take on the mindset that a punt is not a bad play.
Fortunately we have the best combo of running backs since Chubb and Sony. That will help. Truss has been playing better, and the left side has been much better since Freeling came in as the starter. As long as our defense keeps playing like they did Saturday, I feel like we have a chance in any upcoming game.

Addressing Buster stuff

Ok, I can see some don’t appreciate me having as much fun with this as I have been.

There is definitely trolling involved on my part. However, there is real smoke about Buster coming back.

The ball will be in Bobo court. I’ve heard he is likely to take the Muschamp route.

Buster will be right up at the very top of the list if that happens for many reasons. I’m sure there will be other candidates also. Probably some NFL guys. Kirby likes people he knows he can trust and people whose family loves Athens.

I know Bobo wants a ring. So that could play into things too, the outcome of this season.
