Great news is Musk wants to cut Waste! Soros & Gates goals were significantly different! I prefer Musk goals! If they invite Soros and Gates to cut government waste? The more the merrier, but we know that won’t happen.

I trust what Rubio said yesterday. USAID was actively working against US interest in several countries. He did say that some spending was justified and would continue, just not that which goes against US foreign policy.Actually, that is not true. USAID has been pushing US interests abroad through supporting humanitarian aid programs. Just ask George Bush, who leveraged this organization to advance US interests. It is a lever we utilize to gain international support. What we support should always be questioned. However, this is one of the most efficient government organizations and comprises less than 1% of the budget. It is basically a group of contractors that directs funds per congress to assist humanitarian relief. So the juice while making headline news is barely worth the squeeze.
Thank goodness there are those like litedawg1968 who care. Trump and Musk are evil and those who refuse to acknowledge that will one day regret that they put their heads in the sand when our democratic freedoms and values were being taken away.Man , Trump and Elon are driving you guys insane arent they?

What democratic freedom is being threatened here?Thank goodness there are those like litedawg1968 who care. Trump and Musk are evil and those who refuse to acknowledge that will one day regret that they put their heads in the sand when our democratic freedoms and values were being taken away.

i notice no critiques of any of the cuts being made and corrupt spending, just focused on the fact that Elon wasn’t elected. Why does the work DOGE is doing scare anyone? It’s the reason I went from a lifelong democrat to abrepublican last year as it has become the peoples party and is holding government officials (unelected) accountable. That should be welcomed by all and is by the vast majority. I am half sad to see the party i supported for so many years come to its demise, but it is certainly self-inflicted and full of corruption.
Exactly, Trump and businessmen like him understand how pennies turn into dollars, turns into hundreds of dollars, turns into thousands and so on and so on. Like you, I think $500 bil isn't out of the question. If we can realize that type of savings and tighten up the government ship that's a nice chunk of money over 10 yrs.The main argument against saving money seems to be "That's only $1 billion dollars. A tiny fraction of the budget.".....rinse and repeat, for hundreds of different things, maybe thousands. The obvious questions:
1) Ever think that maybe it was this kind of thinking that took our deficit to where it is? A million different instances of "well it's not that much money (and more importantly, it's not MY money).
2) Any wasteful dollars saved at any level is by definition a good thing. Do we abandon the whole effort because there isn't $2 trillion in one place that we can find? I see headlines like "no way Musk can cut $2 trillion." I totally agree....but if we cut $500 billion of wasteful spending, that is an incredible thing, no?
3) To the extent that USAID has very good legit purposes, there is nothing to fear. The only thing that Musk is doing is calling attention to what specifically is being spent, and where. Good programs / causes need not worry. Doesn't mean that cutting the bad shit out of any organization is bad.
DOGE sounded like a really good idea. Now the level of protest coming from the left over simply pulling the wool back makes me think it is an absolutely incredible idea.
Thou doth protest too much.
Not necessarily. If the Democrats ever launch a version of DOGE they are going to go after corporate welfare, defense spending, and other areas of the budget liked by Republicans.DOGE doesn't work the other way, because DOGE is about negative action - cuts and elimination. The inverse of DOGE is more spending, more agencies, sub agencies, government-funded NGOs, etc.
The progressive version of DOGE is essentially the status quo of Washington for a century.
USAID was established by an executive order from John Kennedy so President Trump can eliminate that department by executive order. All Trump wants to do is see where the money is going and who it’s going to and what for. From Heather Cox Richardson:
I’m going to start tonight by stating the obvious: the Republicans control both chambers of Congress: the House of Representatives and the Senate. They also control the White House and the Supreme Court. If they wanted to get rid of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), for example, they could introduce a bill, debate it, pass it, and send it on to President Trump for his signature. And there would be very little the Democrats could do to stop that change.
But they are not doing that.
Instead, they are permitting unelected billionaire Elon Musk, whose investment of $290 million in Trump and other Republican candidates in the 2024 election apparently has bought him freedom to run the government, to override Congress and enact whatever his own policies are by rooting around in government agencies and cancelling those programs that he, personally, dislikes.
The replacement of our constitutional system of government with the whims of an unelected private citizen is a coup. The U.S. president has no authority to cut programs created and funded by Congress, and a private citizen tapped by a president has even less standing to try anything so radical.
In the area of trying to cut out wasteful spending, I think we can rest assured that whatever precedent Trump / Musk set will not be weaponized when the democrats are in power. By definition, getting aggressive in this area runs completely counter to the purpose of the democratic party.
You must be a Dem who is helping funnel these funds to these country’s that are enjoying all these exotic gifts.I just called the bank that holds my mortgage--needed some information from them, and to reset my online password. They asked for my loan #, the last four of my ss#, my property address, my full name as it appears on my loan document. This was information I was happy to give them, because several years ago I chose this bank as my mortgage provider and I believe the people at this bank will protect my valuable personal information.
I do NOT give Elon Musk or anyone he would designate that same permission to access my personal information. Elon has not been elected, he has not been vetted, he has absolutely no business knowing my social security number or any other personal ID information of mine.
Let's say that the organization I was calling just now was the Small Business Administration (as as a multi-decade small business owner, I took out SBA-guaranteed loans at least twice). Elon Musk would already have all my personal info and could use it however he pleases. How would he use my info?--why would he want to use my info? It doesn't matter, I would've never given him permission to use it, he has no right to it, and he's already broken the law by accessing it.
I'm not really "afraid of" Elon, but as a US citizen I am concerned about him and extremely pissed off about what he's doing.
I hope like hell the Pubs go after wasteful military spending. Now, I would hope they would take the savings and invest in modern technology to enhance readiness but every government agency should be subjected to strict audits and be held accountable for how they spend tax payer's dollars. Not necessarily. If the Democrats ever launch a version of DOGE they are going to go after corporate welfare, defense spending, and other areas of the budget liked by Republicans.
I am all for it both ways. Waste is waste and its good to have someone other than OMB looking at spending.
Thank goodness there are those like litedawg1968 who care. Trump and Musk are evil and those who refuse to acknowledge that will one day regret that they put their heads in the sand when our democratic freedoms and values were being taken away.
Elon and staff are following the money.........not the people.I just called the bank that holds my mortgage--needed some information from them, and to reset my online password. And you know this how, Chief?Elon and staff are following the money.........not the people.
It'll be alright sweetie 😘
No argument here. Anyone who is a fan of eliminating the bullshit spend should be in favor of all items being highlighted.I hope like hell the Pubs go after wasteful military spending. Now, I would hope they would take the savings and invest in modern technology to enhance readiness but every government agency should be subjected to strict audits and be held accountable for how they spend tax payer's dollars.
Actually, USAID was created as part of the Foreign Assistance Act, which was passed by Congress in 1961.USAID was established by an executive order from John Kennedy so President Trump can eliminate that department by executive order. All Trump wants to do is see where the money is going and who it’s going to and what for.
Big difference between SBA and Elon Musk: I gave the SBA permission to access private info. I did not give Elon the same permission. The bureaucrat at SBA wasn't elected and has access to your private info.
No, it wasn't. Congress pass a law to set up a foreign aid program and Kennedy created USAID with an executive order to comply with the law. Nothing says the function of distributing foreign aid can't run thru the state dept and nothing says the funding must go to countries and orgs that are in conflict with the current POTUS's foreign policy.Actually, USAID was created as part of the Foreign Assistance Act, which was passed by Congress in 1961.
There is an endless list of bureaucrats that have access to your private information.Big difference between SBA and Elon Musk: I gave the SBA permission to access private info. I did not give Elon the same permission.
Yes, Kennedy was complying with the Foreign Assistance Act which mandated the creation of an agency. So he was not acting on his own and used the executive order to create the agency. Someone else trying to eliminate it with an executive order is trying to take away power from Congress. The big issue is the executive branch trying to control the Supreme Court and Congress. No, it wasn't. Power is not being taken from Congress as long as the agency spends the money. POTUS has the authority to direct all foreign policy and foreign aid. Iows, POTUS can put Rubio in charge of USAID and direct him to give the money that has been going to the Lutheran Church to facilitate illegal activity and give it to an org that is spending money to keep immigrants in their home country.Yes, Kennedy was complying with the Foreign Assistance Act which mandated the creation of an agency. True. But whatever words you want to use, Trump is intending to eliminate it by executive order. Change is needed in a lot of areas, but the way he is going about it is not good.Power is not being taken from Congress as long as the agency spends the money. Heard today but have not verified that USAID has been sending millions to the taliban and hamas. We also know USAID has been sending millions to NGOs which are violating US immigration law.True. But whatever words you want to use, Trump is intending to eliminate it by executive order. Change is needed in a lot of areas, but the way he is going about it is not good.
I wasn't defending USAID; let's get rid of all the inappropriate contributions you mention. The problem I have is Trump trying to disrupt the government on an unprecedented scale. The executive order regarding citizenship was a shot right out of the gate. So all we have now is chaos as another federal judge has issued a nationwide injunction. No one is going to convince me he is going about things in an appropriate way.Heard today but have not verified that USAID has been sending millions to the taliban and hamas. I am okay with AID going to impoverished countries to feed little girls but I dont think many Americans want their tax dollars used to prop up corrupt regimes that steal the aid or to fund terror orgs. I am not sure how anyone could justify a government agency knowingly funding groups that violate US law.
Problem is we have been trying to do it the appropriate way for decades and we have reached a point where some agencies thumb their nose at oversight. POTUS is in charge of the executive branch so while I expect conflict between the exec and leg branches, agencies under the purview of the exec aren't in a position to negotiate with the POTUS.I wasn't defending USAID; let's get rid of all the inappropriate contributions you mention. "Appropriate" is measured by lasting outcomes, not process.I wasn't defending USAID; let's get rid of all the inappropriate contributions you mention. They are not looking for individuals data, they are looking for what was spent, and how much.Big difference between SBA and Elon Musk: I gave the SBA permission to access private info. I did not give Elon the same permission.
And I think the State Department should run this. You have a bunch of renegade’s running it now that thinks they answer to no one. If they have nothing to hide then why are they screaming like a bunch of idiots! No, it wasn't. No, that sounds like the end justifies the mean, which may not be the way to go about it. I'm not talking about appropriate outcomes (I said to get rid of inappropriate contributions), I'm talking the appropriate process for a President."Appropriate" is measured by lasting outcomes, not process.
That measure, however, can only be known in the future.
In politics, the ends do justify the means. No, that sounds like the end justifies the mean, which may not be the way to go about it. I'm not talking about appropriate outcomes (I said to get rid of inappropriate contributions), I'm talking the appropriate process for a President.
I'm not talking about politics. I'm talking about running the fcking government. Glad you are happy. In politics, the ends do justify the means.
If the proper "means" results in no payoff, they are totally inadequate. Now, ideally, the "ends" results in a manner where you the proper means can be re-established - but noble ineffectiveness has no value.
I'm using politics as interchangeable with governing, but understand viewing the two as separate. As such, I would only say that it's perhaps even more true in running the government - because the stakes there are much higher than a particular election.I'm not talking about politics. I'm talking about running the fcking government. Glad you are happy.
You’re correct on Taliban. Not sure on Hannas but probably. Also reporting USAID and CIA were involved in Trump impeachment. See where that goesHeard today but have not verified that USAID has been sending millions to the taliban and hamas.
