There's been a lot of ill informed discussion and misinformation on proposed tariffs by the incoming Trump Administration. The first of them, for Mexico and Canada, have already been announced. President Elect Trump has stated that the tariffs can be avoided by those countries taking up serious enforcement of their border with the United States.

Canadian podcaster Shaun Newman has written a good summary of how this has gone for Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau. The link provided is to a text rollup of a series of X posts. You do not have to use or go on X to read it. I am also including the first post in the thread, below, if you care to follow the discussion on X.

The short version is that Trump announced 25% tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian goods coming to the United States. Within days, Trudeau appeared at Mar-A-Lago to find out what he has to do to avoid this. Within 3 hours, Trudeau committed to enforcing the Canadian border, providing more technology resources to border enforcement, and more law enforcement personnel on the border. This to the benefit of citizens of both the US and Canada. All of these things he has not done for 9 years in office.

When your goal is to be globally popular, you don’t risk pissing folks off by being a tough negotiator. Hey it isn’t your money anyway right?

Trump’s superpower is his willingness to be hated in pursuit of representing the interests of Americans.
I don’t like many things Trump does, but I’ll be damned if he didn’t scare NATO countries into paying more last presidency. He will again.

They are taking all the money they save on military and spending it on largesse for their own social programs (woke nonsense).

If we forced them to pay more, they would run their own countries much more seriously.

Yall will fall for any global politician posturing if they’re posing with your idol. It’s sad

I'll take tariffs over what’s going on now.

It’s sad that you are still being an Anti-Trumper. He’s done more since Election Day than Joe did in 4 years. Good luck with your miserable outlook. I hope in the next few weeks you are surrounded by people who love you and make you realize there is more to life.

Our economic system for the first 150 years of American history was built on protectionist tariffs.

The people panicking over tariffs now are those who look at the gdp and think it represents individual wealth and prosperity.

I totally agree. I said this before and was vilified by the lefties. I said we need a villian right now. Period. That isn’t Joe or Kamala. Well they are both villains but agaisnt the best interests of this country. It has already shown to be positive. I expect that to continue

I did say that in my post too. :). Totally agree
You did, but your post is a little hard to follow. I had to read it a few times before getting it fully.

I think what you are saying is along the lines of America needing a true leader who is not afraid to get some people's attention by scaring them to death.

Joe and Kamala are not leaders and are not capable of meaningful negotiations with foreign nations to promote American interests aggressively.

Donald Trump may come across to some as an asshole on the world stage, but he's our asshole.

Yea. I changed it in the middle of work. Then forgot to go back to make it better. I deserve the call out. Totally agree with your post. I am blaming my post on work getting in the way. :)

Tariffs are inflationary

'Drill baby drill' is anti-inflationary

Reducing govt spending is anti-inflationary

Reducing Ukrainian warfare/welfare is anti-inflationary

Eliminating green energy subsidy is anti- inflationary

Even if trumps tariff threats become reality in one or more countries,...it will never reach the double digit inflation rates of the Biden puppeteers

Did he discuss the Ontario Premier’s remarks about Canada cutting off the energy that they supply to the northern border states? Those kind of facts don’t fit his myopic narrative, which you endorse.

Podcaster though, so let’s listen to him (and you) over the qualified economists who say that the tariff idea is misguided at best, and likely to have disastrous consequences.

No. He didn’t dignify his emotional reaction with a response. Same way Trump didn’t. Ontario gets it worse than anyone if they do this. Do that when it is cold. Cause one death. I know you don’t think this is a real threat from Ontario.

Tariffs are used as a bargaining chip. And worked so well last time that Biden not only kept them. He increased them. I get you hate Trump. But this needs to happen. You guys brought this on yourselves. You voted for a guy that literally is falling asleep at summits. Despite all evidence to the contrary that his brain was fvcked, the left still voted for him. It is why Trump was re elected. I know you are more middle ground I think, but the other party has only themselves to blame. What is worse is over the last two months most have shown that they haven’t learned a thing.

Yea, leaders who bluster and make hollow threats should not be taken seriously. We agree on that much.

The threat from a wild card carries weight. Yes he blusters as well. Probably makes hollow threats. But they don’t think that. Which is why Trudeau was on a plane five minutes later to come work this out. He obviously took him seriously.
