In other breaking news, water is wet.
Our government has been a shit show for decades.
I’m a free trade guy myself, and generally against tariffs, but other countries sure as hell put them on us, and our domestic manufacturing base has been dwindling for a long time.
There was a time up until about thirty years ago when most of our clothing was made here in the U.S. This clothing was produced
by a lot those uneducated hillbillies that the elites positively abhor in most any town in the rural south with a population of at least 900-1000.
My father was in this business. He would own and operate one or two of those small manufacturing plants at any one time. I worked in them, too, boxing up and shipping garments, loading and unloading trucks, hauling those garments to various places in Florida, Alabama, SC, NC.
Then came NAFTA, and the domestic manufacturing of clothing all but vanished. I watched him hang on as long as he could, seriously considering moving us all to the Dominican effing Republic, where a lot of that manufacturing went, until it simply became unsustainable. Fortunately, one of the few places clothing is still made here is in prisons by prisoners, and my father was able to secure a position with the state of Georgia to oversee that operation.
Tariffs are something neither of us wants to see, but maybe the only solution to restoring our manufacturing base.
When it’s all gone, when we don’t make anything here anymore, when everything is imported, other governments will have our shit show government, and by extension, me and you, by the short and curlies.
