If you have never read the book "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" then DO IT. It should be required reading for every High School student. Every American should read this book!! I've read it 3 times it is so good.

The original front cover of this book has a picture of a soldier, unshaved with helmet on, carrying a M16 through the jungle in this battle. That soldier is Rick Rescorla. Rick was head of security at Morgan Stanley World Trade Center Tower 2 and was killed after safely getting several thousand employees out of Tower 2. He was last seen going back up stairs looking for more people to save. Hal Moore said he was the greatest platoon leader he ever saw.

Saving Private Ryan and Patton our both up there at the top for me.

Others that I like Blackhawk Down, Glory, Braveheart, Big Red One, Midway. We Were Soildiers ..and plenty of others listed in this thread already. Its a genre of film that Hollywood has actually gotten right a few times.

Band of Brothers
A Bridge Too Far
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape

Tropic Thunder
I was living in Denver when it came out and was part of an advance screening show of Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express in the same week. It was a most enjoyable Rocky Mountain High time! As I commented in a previous post - Tom Cruise's best acting of his career!

The Big Red One- Second tier to the others above but still really good.
Darkest Hour- Minimal battle scenes but it's a war movie. And it's excellent.
They Shall Not Grow Old- WWI as real as it gets
Das Boot
Kelly's Heroes- Best war comedy before Tropic Thunder
Apocalypse Now

Coming Home in a Body Bag directed by Lee Donowitz

Band of Brothers is the best war event, presentation, or however it’s labeled as it is not a movie per se. However, IMO, it is the absolute best.
The Longest Day
Tora Tora Tora may be the most accurate movie of all.
Twelve O’Clock High is great and an “air” movie as opposed to the “ground” movies we all reference here.

I read an article in which a guy said “The Cruel Sea” was the best war movie he’d ever seen. I’ve never heard of it. What do Y’all say?

A couple recent additions (made in the last 5 years)
Greyhound. Navy anti-submarine destroyer against the German U-Boats with Tom Hanks.
Midway (2019). Remake of the original and REALLY well done.
