I love our team, but …

The SEC is gonna be a bitch!

We have 9 teams ranked, and un ranked Missouri beat #1 Kansas. Last night, unranked Arkansas beat #14 Michigan.

I’ve watched a lot of these games and these teams are tough!

Again, I love our team but “good golly” it’s gonna be a major, major accomplishment to win enough in the SEC to make the tournament!

It kills me to say so, … and I hope i’m wrong!

Transfer Portal/Needs

I always thought the major needs for us with the transfer portal was WR and DL. I assumed that we would be fine with Stockton or Puglisi at QB next year, personally thinking Pugs would be the guy because his talent is off the charts. With us going after Mendoza we are basically saying those 2 aren’t the guys. Is he the starter next year for sure if he comes? I know QB is the most important position but I assumed we would be fine with what we had and had more pressing needs.

NonDawg Atlanta Landmark closing

After 31 years in business, Java Jive on Ponce is closing on the 22nd of December.

Steven and Shira, the owners and very dear friends of mine, created a true Atlanta classic.

They have been serving some of the best breakfast fare in Atlanta in their retro diner, full of Art Deco pieces, including a functioning original Easy Bake Oven and Mr. Sno-Cone., along with a superb collection of vintage Formica dinette tables and chairs. The mural of a man drinking a cup of coffee will be missed, as the property is slated for redevelopment.

If you are in the area this week, stop in and eat a bite with them in celebration of their legacy. Two weekends left to enjoy their legendary gingerbread waffle with lemon curd.

ATLANTA – Grand Canyon's Holiday Hoopsgiving marquee matchup with Georgia might seem like a tilted environment for the Bulldogs, coming just 70 miles away from their Athens campus.

Holiday Hoopsgiving
But Grand Canyon guard Collin Moore has far more Atlanta basketball experience than anyone in the Saturday game after spending his first three college years at Georgia State, which is less than a mile away from State Farm Arena.

Even as the event's only local team, Georgia will be hard-pressed to see more meaning in the downtown Atlanta event than what "C-Mo" takes into the Lopes-Bulldogs game, which can be seen on SEC Network and ESPN+ at 4 p.m. (Phoenix time). The tripleheader at the Atlanta Hawks' arena starts with Auburn vs. Ohio State at 11 a.m. and Arizona State vs. Florida at 1:30 p.m.

"This game hits a lot different because I'm going back to my second home," said Moore, who grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas. "I've got a lot of family and friends that are coming out to support me, and I appreciate every single one of them."

The game will draw plenty more eyes for being the highest-ranked opponent that GCU (6-2) has played this season. Georgia (8-1) is No. 22 in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings with wide-ranging statistical excellence.

The bulldogs rank third nationally in rebound margin per game (plus-13.2), fourth in blocked shots per game (6.1), 22nd in field goal percentage (49.9%) and 25th in scoring margin per game (plus-17.9).

"Georgia is really big around the rim," said GCU head coach Bryce Drew, who recorded his 100th Lopes win on Saturday. "They've dominated the paint. Obviously, that's a major concern going in with how dominant they've been.

"They have a really good combination of bigs who finish at an elite level, protect the rim and are really physical."

Georgia's only loss came Nov. 23, when Marquette beat the Bulldogs 80-69 in the Bahamas. Georgia has not played since defeating Notre Dame 69-48 at home on Dec. 3.

The Bulldogs' balance features five players averaging between 9.4 points and 15.9 points with the leading scorer being 6-foot-11 freshman Asa Newell, Georgia's second-highest ranked recruit to Anthony Edwards. He is shooting 56% from the field and complements the backcourt experience of 6-5 graduate transfers Tyrin Lawrence (Vanderbilt) and Dakota Leffew (Mount St. Mary's).

"They have perimeter players who make shots and have a lot of speed to beat you off the dribble," Drew said. "We just want to overall defend better. We've had some good moments where we've defended well, but getting consistency defensively for longer stretches is what we're looking for."

Consistency is the second-best area of growth at GCU for Moore, a high school teammate of Lawrence. Health is the leading change for Moore after his 2020-23 stay in Atlanta was marred by two left knee procedures and torn left hand ligaments.

After missing 40 of 82 games while at Georgia State, Moore played 42 consecutive games for GCU before cautiously sitting out Saturday's blowout of Life Pacific. Moore is having his career's best shooting season, hitting 48% of his 3-point attempts and shooting 50% overall from the field. He also is averaging a career-best 4.9 rebounds per game to go with 10.6 points, 2.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

"I'm just blessed to be at Grand Canyon because it's great to be here," Moore said. "Phoenix is just a different vibe of where Atlanta is. At first, I was a two-way player with more focus on scoring and playing defense. Now, I can do a variety of things. I can pass, score, defend, rebound."

The Lopes surely will need all of that and more from Moore to upset Georgia in the Peach State, the first stop of a challenging trip that will continue Monday at Louisiana Tech (8-2).

GCU arrived in Atlanta late Thursday to have Friday for practice and acclimation. A group of Havocs students also traveled to make the "neutral" site less partial to the home-state team.

The last time the Lopes traveled nearly as far for a game, GCU won 69-64 at Liberty last December.

"We expect to see a lot of red there," Drew said of the It'll be good four guys. We'll definitely have some purple too cheering there for us. But this will help prepare us for conference season with going on the road for two games."

Lope tracks

  • GCU ranks fifth nationally for free throw attempts per game at 28.0, which is more than last season's average (25.8) that also ranked fifth nationally. This season's team is shooting 73.2% from the charity stripe to lag slightly behind last season's 74.9% clip.
  • The Lopes rank 19th nationally for most opponent turnovers per game (16.3). Georgia averages 13.8 turnovers per game, which is the nation's 62nd highest average.
  • GCU is 4-0 since junior center Duke Brennan returned from an arm injury that sidelined him for the Lopes' 2-2 start.
  • In his third Lopes season, senior guard Ray Harrison needs eight points to pass T.C. Dean (1956-59, 1,210 points) on the GCU career scoring leader list. Harrison's 2,094 career points, including two years at Presbyterian, rank seventh among active Division I players.
  • Georgia head coach Mike White is in his third season leading the Bulldogs after previously coaching seven seasons at Florida and four seasons at Louisiana Tech. he has a 287=162 career record.

NonDawg Joe Moore Award to Army

I’ve been pretty critical of some previous winners chosen but pretty solid choice this year. Having watched all 12 Army games, this group is experienced, very assignment sound and “nasty within the rules”.

Enjoy watching them today unless you like squids. For that I really can’t help you.

Belichick is going to usher in a new management model for college football...

We all causally say that college football is becoming the NFL. Well, it needs to be managed similarly, too, and that's the model Belichick is introducing at UNC. He's got Michael Lombardi as his GM at UNC to build the roster and manage NIL.

This is going to be the way forward. I won't be surprised to see Kirby bring in a GM role soon, too.

Not to be a wet blanket, but

I just want to caution us regarding Gunner and the playoff run. First of all, I’m not saying Gunner will fall flat or that we won’t/can’t win it all. There’s obviously a great chance for us to pull this out and I do believe in Gunner.

1. Everyone assumes our run game will improve vastly with Gunner at the helm. I don’t think this has no chance of improving, but we better hope like hell that it does. If the run game bogs down, Gunner isn’t Beck, won’t ever be, so we simply cannot assume he will be able to throw us out of it like Beck could. Not saying he can’t either, just unproven.

2. While bringing us back in a pressure situation in the SECCG was huge, we can’t assume the offense will have the same amount of juice as it did then. With three weeks in between, I don’t think the team will have the same emotional momentum as they did in that moment. That was highly galvanizing and that “feeling” of that moment is hard to replicate. All indications and rumors are that Gunner is a gamer under the lights. Let’s hope we see that. But there’s a realistic chance that shell shock could be a major factor. If you take the emotion of the moment out and all that remains is the pressure, could get sideways. Again, not saying it will, just caution here.

3. Rookie mistakes. Will they rear their heads? If so, to what extent? If Bobo can consistently put GS in good positions to win with scheme, and Gunner can limit boneheaded mistakes, I like our chances. But combine this with points 1 and 2, and things could get squirrelly quick. This is the least of my concerns out of the three though.

Overall, I love our chances in this playoff, though, even with all that being said. Love that we have Gunner in the wings and that the team has his back. I think our culture gets us through this, and Georgia beating Georgia is the only way this ends poorly. I think Gunner has what it takes, but Bobo has to help him out. Run game HAS to flip a switch, and I’m thinking it will. Pocket has to move. His slower motion and height will be an issue in the center of the pocket if I had to guess. He can’t play hero ball. Take the check downs and throw it away - no need to be Houdini. Stay ahead of the chains.

Bottom line: I call a Natty for us. Our culture and competitive fire are unmatched. I believe this is a storybook season for us. Greatest coaching job of Kirby’s career regardless. Team leaders are stepping up. Nobody has given up at any point. We’ve overcome more adversity than most teams have even faced. We got this.

Early Notre Dame defense notes

Watched their Defense against USC. Also going to watch against Tech and Louisville.

- Primarily 4-down team. 44 is only pass rusher that might cause issues. No true difference makers. Do a lot of interior twists because of it too. Feel like they can be run on.

- Lot of man-to-man and heavy boxes. When in doubt, they bring pressure and trust their DBs to cover. Watts is a really good player at safety. Very aggressive.

USC OLine played below average and offense was inconsistent and they still put up 28 on them.

The two defenses that UGA might face are definitely different. Indiana better up front, not as great in the secondary. ND average up front, really good in secondary.
