Trump and Vance ambushed Zelensky today and I suspect Trump is going to use the fake outrage caused by a leader trying to defend the existence of his country to end all aid to Ukraine.

This has been the plan all along. The UN vote with Russia, the lies about who started the war and Zelensky's lack of support at home, the lies claiming nearly double the spend in aid compared to what we have actually spent. Even the stupid comments about Zelensky's attire (look at what Churchill wore to visit the WH during wartime). All with not a single word about Russia or Putin.

This was all set up for today. I'll wager that we will end all aid, and it will lead to what will likely be an end to the NATO alliance within two years. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

Could Putin have written this script any better?

I wouldn't be surprised if Putin didn't write the script. Of course Putin's feelings were hurt by the "Russia, Russia, Russia" investigation. That would be the one that Russia did interfere in the the 2016 election on Trump's behalf. It also noted no evidence of direct collision by Trump. Found significant obstruction of justice by Trump but could not advocate for prosecution as he was the sitting President.

You’d be guessing wrong, but you clearly have a point to make. Please proceed.
Well here are some factual problems with your post:

1) "Trump and Vance ambushed Zelensky"

Zelensky wasn't ambushed, he was the aggressor. He began lecturing Vance when Vance was asked a question about Putin. That is what kicked the whole debacle off. You can say his point is valid, I get it - but prior to that the tone of the meeting was very gracious from all involved. It was Zelensky that broke diplomatic protocol.

2) "This has been the plan all along."

Wrong, Trump wanted a peace deal. Part of the peace deal was the mineral deal. A lot of effort had been put into that. Everything else was negotiation. That includes the (pointless) UN vote. Earlier today, Trump literally extended sanctions on Russia. That's actual policy. Now did Trump insult Zelensky recently? Absolutely, because Zelensky was showing his ass then too. But Trump also laughed off his comments yesterday "did I really call Zelensky a dictator? I can't believe I would." Now that may infuriate you - I get it - but that is what Trump walking comments back looks like.

3) "Even the stupid comments about Zelensky's attire"

That was a media question, that was not from Trump or Vance.

4) "All with not a single word about Russia or Putin."

Trump explicitly addressed this. "You want me to say really terrible things about Putin and then say, 'hi, Vladimir. How are we doing on the deal?' It doesn't work that way. I'm not aligned with anybody. I'm aligned with the United States of America, and for the good of the world."

5) "I'll wager that we will end all aid, and it will lead to what will likely be an end to the NATO alliance within two years."

You could be right about this. If so, the blame is with Zelensky for the way he acted. It was objectively stupid. He placed his ego ahead of his cause, that's a basic failure of leadership.

I find this position reasonably persuasive. Good points. Not completely agreeing, but that’s all pretty well reasoned.

He wasn’t ambushed, but they were making him eat a little humble pie. But that is Zelensky’s job in this case, to eat whatever crap he has to save his country. He did not do a good job in that regard.

Two things will happen over the next three months.

Europe is going to escalate against Russia - and distance themselves further from DC, or Zelensky will be gone.

I don’t think he set Zelensky up, I don’t think Trump is that smart, but he is a total shill for Putin.

He’s literally helping Putin write the future. How fu;&ing insane is that?

Britain did not fall from Being the preeminent power in the world to the goofball country it is today overnight. Small steps like this would giveaway it’s power in this position to rivals is what happened.

Zelenskyy is exceedingly corrupt and foolish. He is in no position to bargain and seems to care more about himself than the poor people in his county. His obstinate attitude is astounding. He talks in circles as is very deceptive.

1) I disagree. There was nothing collegial about Vance’s tone leading up to the heated exchange. He was lecturing Zelensky about diplomacy and Zelensky said that history has proven that Putin is not a trustworthy negotiating partner, which is 100% true.

2) Almost every factual comment Trump has made in the last two weeks on the topic of Ukraine has been a lie that characterizes Ukraine negatively, all while offering not a single criticism of Putin or Russia. Even in the meeting today, Trump used the sum of $350b in US aid to Ukraine, when the actual sum is $180b. He didn’t walk anything back.

3) Do you really think a member of the press would be so disrespectful to a head of state? The comments came from a current US Congressman. In fact, it’s the same congressman rumored to be dating MTG.

4) That’s an excuse for his clear effort to shift the blame for the war from Russia to Ukraine. It might be marginally credible if he had tough words for both sides, but he doesn’t. Why the total deference to the aggressor?

5). What? Blame Zelensky for our exit from NATO when Trump’s former National Security Advisor has stated as fact that Trump’s plan in his first term was to exit NATO in his second? Come on. One bad meeting with Ukraine makes Zelensky responsible for abandoning the post WW2 alliance that has been responsible for the most peaceful and economically productive period in world history? That’s a ridiculous assertion.

Trump's antagonism of Ukraine is because of frustrations dealing with them up to today. Again, you can hate that - fine. But to use that to suggest this was planned subterfuge is preferring your own narrative to trying to understand what has gone on.

There was a full deal on the table today. One Trump wanted. One Ukraine agreed to. And it was blown up because Zelensky couldn't hold his tongue.

Yes, because the "reporter" doesn't like Zelensky.

4) That’s an excuse for his clear effort to shift the blame for the war from Russia to Ukraine. It might be marginally credible if he had tough words for both sides, but he doesn’t. Why the total deference to the aggressor?

Because the aggressor is the one with the leverage.

One bad meeting doesn't mean the deal is dead. The question is whether Zelensky can dig himself out of the hole he made. His Fox interview today wasn't a good start.

Maybe Zelensky has some sense talked into him and he comes back the table. Would love to see it. But we haven't seen that from Zelensky so far.

If Zelensky doesn't rebuild his position with Trump, you have two options: Ukraine become increasingly dependent on Europe - and them willing to make up declining American support, which will further divide the EU and DC, or you will have political change in Ukraine. Simple as that.

Don’t even know what that means. Not Germaine at all. I was not supporting Putin but pointing out the folly and idiocy and arrogance of Zelenskyy. What a moronic display he put on when his country’s existence lies in our hands.
If only he had sucked Trump's balls and then thanked him for the privilege of sucking the greatest most beautiful balls of all time. Sorry. Trump and his side kick were trying to emasculate Zelensky.

I think that’s false. Even if it were true. Without the US and and peace deal Zelenskyy will be dead eventually and his people will be ruled by Russian in short order.

We will all be dead eventually. A reasonable peace can be achieved but it requires continuing aid to Ukraine until a deal is made. The world is better off stopping Russian aggression in Ukraine rather than waiting for the next country to be invaded. Russian forces have been degraded. Better not to let them rearm right away

Zelenskyy and his people will be over taken and Zelenskyy will flee for his life. Exactly why he needs to take the deal and not lecture his benevolent savior…..The USA -represented by our chosen leader

The fact Russia tried and failed to take Kyiv is actually a major point against the "Russia will take Poland" fear.

Poland is in NATO. I'm not sure if that means anything with Trump in office. To be honest the Baltic countries and Moldova are most likely next.

Seems obvious that you can’t see Zelenskyy’s impudent behavior for what it is. You seems butt hurt about about something….maybe that trump is our leader? I suspect this to be the source or your grievance. Same with Wildup
Not butt hurt at all. Just not willing to give up living in the real world in order to assauge Trump's delusional ego.

The Baltic states are also in NATO and Moldova isn't a border country.

Now we can have a larger conversation about what NATO commitments look like in practice, but that's a highly different calculation for Putin in basic realpolitik.

Does Taiwan have any minerals to give us? I suspect China will go ahead and get that done too
Taiwanese self defense capability is something that should be taken very seriously, because direct American engagement with China isn't something we should want either.

Bur China's capability to take Taiwan may be as overrated as assumptions about Russia's capability in Ukraine.

Trumps ego is above all…. aside form him being a puppet to Putin

Can you people really not see this is talking out of both sides of your mouth?

I hate to say it but you appraisal is off. Zelenskyy clearly has an insatiable ego amd is arrogant, impudent and honestly very foolish. your take is obviously partisan and biased. Trump was clearly in the right and in the position of benefactor ….Zelenskyy so dumb and arrogant to bite the hand that can feed him and his people. And to lecture that leader in his own home.

Thank you for the correction on who asked the question about Zelensky’s wardrobe and thank you for putting quotations around the word reporter. That guy is in but the AP is out. Amazing.

If you have the time, watch Zelensky’s interview with Brett Baier. Very informative regarding some of the topics we are discussing.

Trump and his administration have been blatantly lying about and insulting Zelensky and Ukraine, we are talking big lies here, all while voting with and cozying up to Russia, and we are supposed to be surprised that Zelensky is a little salty about that?

Zelensky should be salty. He should be furious.

But a leader in his position doesn't have the luxury to express those emotions publicly. That is placing his ego above his duty.

I can’t argue with that, other than to say that perhaps he considered Trump a lost cause and he has to show strength to Europe and the rest of the world.

Conservative Bret Stephens sums up the situation well.

Fair. But Trump's crap doesn't make the US look better. We are the richest and most powerful country in the world. Also formerly the strongest proponent of a world where the strong don't invade the less strong. Are our allies really taking advantage of us? If so how did we become the richest country in the world. Near as I can tell, Trump is preaching a false Gospel

Bret Stephens isnt a conservative - much less "ultra conservative." He's a "neoconservative" NYT writer who hates Trump.

He's also apparently dumb. The purpose of the mineral deal is to better align American interest and Ukraine - if we have workers and major capital investment, our national interest increases and new trip wires are established. Similarly, the Zelensky negotiation isn't being done in. vacuum, there is a British and French component to security components.

The WWII apology also misses that we were actually charging the British for our support prior to Pearl Harbor (while giving Stalin everything he wanted for free.) I would be fascinated to see what how a complete moron like Stephens would rank today compared to Malta.
