How Tariffs Really Work

There's been a lot of ill informed discussion and misinformation on proposed tariffs by the incoming Trump Administration. The first of them, for Mexico and Canada, have already been announced. President Elect Trump has stated that the tariffs can be avoided by those countries taking up serious enforcement of their border with the United States.

Canadian podcaster Shaun Newman has written a good summary of how this has gone for Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau. The link provided is to a text rollup of a series of X posts. You do not have to use or go on X to read it. I am also including the first post in the thread, below, if you care to follow the discussion on X.

The short version is that Trump announced 25% tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian goods coming to the United States. Within days, Trudeau appeared at Mar-A-Lago to find out what he has to do to avoid this. Within 3 hours, Trudeau committed to enforcing the Canadian border, providing more technology resources to border enforcement, and more law enforcement personnel on the border. This to the benefit of citizens of both the US and Canada. All of these things he has not done for 9 years in office.
