Our execution on offense was extraordinarily poor…

Even worse than usual. First play of game toss sweep Truss doesn’t block a soul. 2nd play of game we run play action roll out to TE in the flat. ETN runs the wrong play so him and the TE are on top of each other…busted play Gunner tucks it. We get bailed out on the next play with PI. The next play is the reverse to Arian where he has to retreat 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage to avoid people in the backfield. The next play is a diamond formation where ETN and Gunner mess up the handoff/play fake again but Gunner still picks up 6 or so yards. Then you get the fumble out of bounds to the 25 for 4th and 21.

These are supposed to be the scripted plays we’ve been working on for 3 weeks. I invite you to watch the sky cam of that first drive to see how awful it was.

Didn’t seem like we improved much in-season…

Was thinking about it today. Clemson was our best overall performance this season. Was definitely our best RB performance. But overall, that was our best game this year.

Miss State was the best offensive performance. Texas in Austin was the best defensive performance. But Clemson was the best overall.

The day we pounded Clemson in Atlanta, Miami wore out Florida in Gainesville. People were saying Florida might be lucky to go 3-9. Granted Florida had a lot more room to get better from week one, but they did.

Part of the reason I was so confident about beating Notre Dame was seeing them in October. They just didn’t look like that good a team when they played tech at Mercedez Benz. They sure looked like a much stronger team last night.

I don’t know what to make of it. We didn’t have the problems with dropped passes last year. We were arguably more talented defensively this year, but not nearly as good. We were arguably more talented at RB this year, but couldn’t run the ball.

When you consider all that, it really is something that we won the SEC. And went 4-1 against teams that made the 12-team field. Maybe that’ll be more of a point of pride later on. Feels hollow now.

We also didn’t have any play makers emerge who weren’t on the field, and making plays, against Clemson. I guess Etienne would be the exception. Maybe. I don’t know the last time that was really the case either - and we had a couple of guys who looked better against Clemson than they did the rest of the year.

I don’t know the reason for any of that. Maybe things have gotten stale over there. That happens. Either way, this was a pretty atypical season - though we managed to win a lot of games and the SEC anyway.

Who are we rooting for?

Not to take away anything from @RightAway, but I am trying to think who I want to win the NC. I think I am going with PSU.

- I have to root against Texas no matter who they play. That means that I have to pull for tOSU and that might make me puke.
- ND is not much of a competitive threat to our recruiting, but they are more so than PSU.

Therefore, PSU is the team we want to win the NC.

Other than Florida and Tenn fans, does the thought of Bobo and...

Guunar returning next year as OC and starter excite you? I said when he was first hired he would leave the Offense in worse shape than when he took over, and here we are. I think he is gone but whoever takes over is going to have their work cut out for them unless we can land an elite QB at the last minute in the Portal.

What now?

Turned that crap off and separated from the board and anything football related last evening. It was ugly and that 1 can be argued for hours. Defense did enough but can’t gift 17 point swings. ETN, strip sack, KO TD and they didn’t have to do much else thereafter.

What now?

I think as Kirby self scouts this bunch and looks to 2025 he’s going to see 2 key things stand out. We need playmakers outside, and we need staff cohesion again.

The first part is a no brainer for all to see and I think it’s clear it’s being addressed if we use this recruiting class as an indicator. 5-6 kids coming out of the box that are probably better than 90% of the room. Hopefully Branch comes on down. Noah Thomas is more intriguing to me than Key was. 6’6 track star and would be a nice addition.

The TE room quietly had a solid year. I think Luckie and Delp are damn solid. Next year will be supplemented by either a more mature Redell, Barbour(him), or Elyiss. Won’t be as experienced as Yurosek but the athletic upside for the rotation is greatly improved.

The OL room probably has a new coach. Or we have a new OC 1. When your OL coach strongly favors doing things 1 way and the OC another. You get 2024 and 2019… The talent in the room is going to be a bit more evened out in terms of 1st wave/developmental kids. Freeling and Greene both will have to really, really play well to hold off the younger tackles. We get improved tackle play and a bit more cohesion and sound technique from the bunch. OL will be solid next year.

As long as 3 is here. RB is a non worry.

Gunner may very well be the guy in 2025. I’m not knocking the kid at all. He made a ton of throws yesterday a large faction of folks had no clue he could make, me included. Problem is how long it takes to get out of his hand. He grew a ton yesterday as the rust came off. He’s steady if the strip sacks can get cleaned up.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the right guy came in the portal our staff going to get him at the same time or the light coming on for Rashad’s. Maybe Pugs. A lot depends on the OC and then it becomes a floor vs ceiling conversation.

No secret we lose some dudes on D. Jalon, Mykell, Starks are first round picks, Smael will go fairly high for an off ball LB(2-3rd round). Everette is even a top 40 pick type guy. Chaz and Dan have been damn solid and steady. Naz and Brinson have been contributors for 3-4 years now and know their way around. All of them sans maybe Chaz will be on an NFL roster come September.

That is why retention is paramount as we look into 2025. We have a TON of high ceiling kids in the 3-4 deep. We lose at least 9 mainstays over the last 2-3 years.

Miller and TID would make a huge difference. Not many squads can swap Damon Wilson, Q, Gabe Harris, out for Jalon, Chaz, Mykell. We go from the DL this year to some combo of McCleod(man down the stretch), Hall, Ogboko, Jordan Thomas, Elijah Griffin, JJA up front. With a miller and TID that group all the sudden is ferocious. Without the ceiling is nasty and the floor is growing pains as they learn to play at this level.

LB will be ok, need to get back to letting them hunt more. Jalon was a stud but he also was a weird fit floating multiple positions. Will be back to 4 dudes who are true ILB’s, with Cole being the versatile 1.

Secondary is what I’m as interested to see play out as WR going into 2025. Ellis is coming for 1 corner spot. Daniel Harris at the other 1. Star and safety is where it gets interesting. Aguero to me is a safety and would be better served there. KJ is a superstar and should be the alpha on D next year. Do they use him at star in moments like Malaki? Roll with Aguero? Try Demello out there? If we get both branches can Zion play the other spot?

That 1 will be fun to watch unfold through the next few months.

The pieces are there to still compete for all the goals we all desire in 2025. Composite roster rankings will love us. I hope the NIL pressure cooker and constant sourcing of funds doesn’t burn CKS out. Good news for us is I believe the man likes recruiting and building a roster as much as he does coaching. I think he’s proven that’s he’s both blood thirsty competitive and a hell of a ball coach. I’ll bet he steps outside his comfort zone a bit in regards to the offense ahead of 2025 much like he did after 2019.

My synopsis of the season

First and foremost I love the GA Bulldawgs! I love Kirby Smart as our head coach! Now let’s break down why we struggled this year.

COACHES!!!!

TE Room got better and Hartley is a stud. Luckie Delp and Reddel will be back! This room get way better after recruiting year with additions of Barbour and Williams. elite talent and helluva a football coach!

RB Room - Did a good job with injuries but I’m not excited about his recruiting ability. I’m willing to give him a little leeway year one! Etienne stud! If he chooses to come back and with the return of #3 we will be more than good. I don’t see either Robinson ever being an impact and at least 1 is moving on. Bowens has a long way to go! Walker will need some S and C before he ever sees the field. Cash Jones has been a godsend. Is an every down SEC back no! We need a game breaker either in portal or recruiting. Depth is an issue! U need 4 in this league to be good. Dwight Phillips has lots of speed but is tiny and needs to get lots bigger

Wr - Do I need to say more. Most drops in college football this year and no go to blow the top of defense guys. Coley can recruit but not catching the ball is fundamental and that essentially falls on him. Bell is a Deebo type. We need to establish that role for him. Smith can go Ty and Evans. They are not SEC quality receivers. Tuggle has a shot but must get his ass in the weight room and eat some humble pie. Humphries big disappointment. Just does not seem to have that dawg in him aka why he was at Vanderbilt.

The biggest factor in my opinion is the loss of the 2 X receivers. We had no answer for that all year…. The good news. There is some real talent coming. Taylor is special. The one we should be paying attention to though is Blackshear. He has the ability to be a superstar! If we hit on these both we are looking at an incredible 1 and 2 punch. Wiley has an opportunity to be the starter at X day 1. Who on our roster is better than him right now? We need a transfer guy and preferably an X or pay Ryan Williams. For your info he is going to look around my sources tell me. PAY HIM Kirby! Kirby has got to pay at least one stud a year! Keep Coley because he can recruit and second give him the $$$ to do it

OL - Abysmal all year. Physicality and just lack of fundamentals and can’t develop players. What OL has gotten better under Searles? I’ll wait. There is slot of talent in that room but the coach is a Group 5 level coach……. Kirby needs to fire his ass!!

The good - Wilson at C is a stud and Jackson will be our starting LT next year. There are a lot of big bodies that can move but we need a coach that can be elite. Searles is not the answer!! I would go find the best OL in the country and pay him at the level of an OC. U win in this league upfront.

QB room - Kirby needs to pay a QB from the portal or land Curtis. They ain’t free or cheap!! I love Gunnar but he is not winning us an NC. Just being real. The one I love is Puglisi. He has the arm talent! We need a portal guy so go get him. Kirby needs to recruit this position like he does defense. $$$ Montgomery has potential but it will be awhile.

Last but not least. Ty Bobo but it’s time to exit the building. He just does not scheme people open consistently and is so damn predictable that my 7 year old told me where the ball was going. Kirby needs to hire elite x and O guy. I don’t give a damn if he can recruit unless it is QB.

In the end the offense created many of our issue on defense! We will be back!!

Take it to the bank

26 days off is not a good recipe for success.

I didn’t think we would be at our best due to the long layoff and the other team playing with 12 days off. Bowls are often times sloppy affairs because of long time off but in those cases, both are off nearly the same time.
To me, we showed rust in execution, tackling, coaching decisions, leadership and determination.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen us play too many of these types of games over the years and lose when I thought we were the better team.
