Officiating

This will be my annual year end post on how bad officiating has gotten across all sports but in particular football. The officials did not cost
that game but the days of “officials don’t determine outcomes” is long gone. It will never be fixed until the protection these guys get, equal to a President, is removed and they are forced to stand in front of the entire media and answer questions publicly.

I’ve always said this would actually help rebuild trust, because there is very little trust now. People would get to hear the reason, the mechanics and the rules behind calls. It makes them human. These guys in the booth who they pull in, just protect their own.

There is no public accountability, which would help as well. Fans then would know that there are consequences for a poor job. Right now we don’t believe that anything happens.

And this is my yearly acknowledgement that it will not happen with unions. Until something bad happens and we are not from it in terms of a cheating scandal, fan attack, etc.

Money and protection rules the day. Something needs to be done.

Good Morning Dawg Nation

Well, that wasn't the ending we were all hoping for but it was a helluva ride. And the Vent is appropriately named for sure! So many emotions, but in the end I hope we all are thankful for what we've experienced over the last few years.
@aholbrook0523 said it best last night (great first post, btw!) We could be UF, Kentucky or any other team that's been sitting at home while we've enjoyed the fruits of CKS's labor......seasons we've dreamed about for 40 years and wondered if we'd ever see again. Be grateful.....events earlier this week reminded me that while I live and breathe Georgia football, it can all be over in a few seconds.

Hang on to your britches, lots of portaling and such is about to happen, maybe?!?!

Praying for all those on the LDGMDNOPL and the GMDN gang too 🙏🏻

Happy Birthday/Anniversary if you're celebrating today 🥳 🎉

Love you guys and gals, MEAN IT!!

Go Dawgs ♥️

Couple of Qs regarding the portal.....

1. Why would anyone be surprised that we don't sign an elite WR? Or more to the point, why would anyone expect us to sign an elite WR? We don't have a returning qb that slings it around AND we've never had a system that features ONE guy. (We haven't had a wr go over 800 yds since 2015 and over 1,000 yds since 2002).

2. Unless there's an established, ELITE qb in the portal, how does Kirby justify bringing in another guy ahead of Rashada, Pugs, and Gunner? All 3 are young guys that haven't had their chance yet. Seems like IF they were good enough to bring in, they are good enough to keep. Especially if the options in the portal are similar, unproven dudes.

I trust Kirby to get it right.

We've become spoiled a little bit. We beat Florida, Tech, Auburn, Tennessee, Clemson and Texas (twice) and won the SEC...

And yet, here we are talking about getting rid of coaches.

Imagine how this run of wins over the above would've felt 10 years ago. I remember that from 1983 through 2006, we didn't beat Florida and Auburn in the same year even once.

I'm not saying people don't have a right to be mad about last night, or about how the team has played all year. But we're a victim of increased expectations.

If Chip Kelly Left a Place Like UCLA, Why Wouldn't Clay Helton Leave GA Southern?

He fits the bill...former HC and respected offensive mind. Even Lane failed at USC and then bounced back and if he succeeded at UGA could get another shot at HC at a good program.

His total pay in 2023 was $752k and in 2024 it was over $800k. We paid Bobo $1.4M to fail and push us to the back of the SEC in offensive statistics/results.

Why not? He'd come.

I am not gonna be negative all off season but

We are the same damn team we were all year. We need improvements in players and several assistants. Good Lord we need a LT.

But I can’t even say I am mad. It’s been a frustrating season from the beginning. We also need to put more importance in NIL or we will see the same problems exacerbate. Coaches good at recruiting aren’t gonna matter if we don’t have the $$$ . Time to make some changes in the staff to show we are addressing g the problems.

Go Dawgs and I am off to work on the wife’s honey do list two weeks before I intended

Looking ahead to Ole Miss...

I've watched the Rebs play 3 times this year (a 80-78 neutral site loss vs. Purdue, an 86-63 win @ Louisville, and an 87-70 loss @ Memphis) . I'm not an expert but these are my observations and expectations for Saturday. Would love others input as well-

The Rebs still run the Chris Beard patented "no-middle" defense. It often times ends up looking like a sort of 2-3 match up zone, but the goal is to take away drives through the middle of the lane and easy entry passes to the low/high post. The way to beat it may seem obvious, but you have to get into the paint and either score at the rim, or kick out to open shooters on the wing. They typically play really good help-side defense and can recover if the ball does get to the middle and kicked back out to an open perimeter player. Against good forwards/post players they'll send help-side traps to try and force the ball back to the perimeter or get a steal. I expect Asa and RJ will see those traps. They have to be ready to make a quick move to score, or pass out to the open wing before the trap arrives. I hope the staff shows game film from their Purdue game. Kaufman-Ren of Purdue absolutely killed them. Either by scoring quickly in the post or making a smart and quick pass out to the wing. Open 3's will be available, we just have to hit them.

While the system is good, this Rebs team is not built like a vintage Chris Beard team and thus aren't as effective on defense as most of his past teams. They are still good, but not elite. They don't have much size or rim protection, and aren't quite as athletic as some of his past Texas Tech teams. Their leading shot blocker is 6'6" Dre Davis at 1.1 per game. The Dawgs need to, and should be able to, score around the rim. Ole Miss does force a lot of steals and has shown some full court press this year. Pressing helped them get back into the Purdue game, and Purdue's guards are definitely better with the ball than ours. I don't think they will start the game pressing, but if the game is close in the second half I think we will see it and our guards have to be able to handle it.

Their offense is pretty free flowing. They play through their guards and shoot a lot of 3's. Everyone on their team has at least a respectable 3 point shot. Pedulla and Murray are the snipers. Our guards have size and athleticism advantages over those guys, so hopefully we can run them off the line and keep them out of rhythm. Would like to see Tyrin and Silas match up with those guys to start. They rely on forcing turnovers and scoring on the fastbreak to supplement their lack of a true post scoring presence. They are really good on the fastbreak.

Dawgs advantages will be rebounding, size, and athleticism. Areas of emphasis should be limiting turnovers, not allowing Rebs clean looks from 3, and getting to the paint via drive or clean passes into the post. I think this will be a really competitive game and a good intro test to see how the Dawgs stack up in the league.

Two sentiments can be valid at same time…

I agree with the sentiment of many here that I’m extremely proud of all this team accomplished (and the memorable wins they gave us) despite having so many obvious flaws. However, I’m also extremely alarmed by the flaws that have now emerged within our roster/depth chart and discouraged by the fact I’m not so sure I see those issues getting significantly better next year (minus some unexpected huge last minute homeruns from the portal).

The cold hard truth IMHO is that on a national level this program had finally separated itself from the pack (two straight national championships, seemingly on the brink of a third, seemingly on brink of becoming the next great dynasty with Saban finally stepping aside)…but now that the dust has settled it’s obvious that we’ve returned back to the pack (two straight seasons falling short of making the “Final 4” and an outlook for next season’s roster that makes it hard to envision anything other than the season being over by January 1).

I know that most any other fan base (minus Alabama) would read my pouting and quickly ridicule how spoiled I am as a fan. Hell I would have done the same as recent as 4 years ago… but damn it we were so close that I could taste us running ahead of that pack for many more laps to go… and it sucks that we now have so many questions about if we have what it takes to pull back ahead and “separate” again.

To be clear, I love Kirby Smart and I know that there are many factors beyond our own control partially responsible for any type of credible “over/under” on how many Nattys he ends up winning in his coaching career to drop by AT LEAST 2 over the course of just 13 months and there is NO ONE else I can name that I’d rather have trying to figure out how to pull us back ahead of the pack in this drastically changed college football landscape! It’s weird though I was as heartbroken as anyone after we lost the Natty to Alabama in his second season, but it eased the pain feeling so confident that it would likely just continue doubling down on the system (which he and Saban seemingly masteredthat got us there so quickly

I hate to interrupt

The bitching and moaning the day after a loss. But I do want to shout out one player we all probably cursed at one point for his play down the stretch. Daylen Everette was absolute DAWG in big time games. And I think he played great last night as well. He really improved. We talk about how our secondary looked worse down the stretch but personally don’t think that was the case with Daylen. He made some money
