Tariffs

“You see, at first, when someone says, ``Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,'' it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works -- but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.

The memory of all this occurring back in the thirties made me determined when I came to Washington to spare the American people the protectionist legislation that destroys prosperity. Now, it hasn't always been easy. There are those in this Congress, just as there were back in the thirties, who want to go for the quick political advantage, who will risk America's prosperity for the sake of a short-term appeal to some special interest group.”

Ronald Reagan, 1982

Is DOGE a good thing or bad thing?

The point of the post was about DOGE. Will transparency AND stopping wasteful spending not help cut the deficit?

A budget? It serves no purpose if you keep spending on salaries and programs not needed.

It looks to me the party in power is the only one in my lifetime to tell me where my money goes.

That’s a start.
I’m all for transparency, although DOGE keeps getting that part wrong. They have had to revise a number of their largest claims of savings because they failed to understand basic accounting and contracts.

The point of a budget should be to balance total revenues and total expenditures to net out flat or ideally at a surplus at the end of the year. If the GOP plans on reducing revenues more than they plan on reducing expenditures, we’re still adding to the deficit.

The budget they just passed is projected to add $2t to $2.5t to the deficit over the next decade. Thats a problem.

The WH still does not know how tariffs work… embarrassing and hurting our country

I think a main motivation of the tariffs is Trump wanting to hang on to the blue collar working man vote. That demographic was a difference maker in his elections and took a voting bloc away from the Democrats.

He has appointed union friendly people in the department of Labor and has not made them an attack target like most other agencies. The tariffs will support job security for that group and retain their loyalty.
Buy america keep people working is a good idea. we should never let it happen to start with. maybe if other countries pais their workers enought live on they could buy their on shit. Why do you think all these people want sell their stuff here. We have a lot can buy problem people who lose their job can't buy much. I am for America and really give give a damn who doesn;t like it

Fraud and waste in SS, Medicaid and Medicare…

If this is accurate it will be a game changer once we fight off all of the liberal judges.

There’s an interview with Chuck Schumer from 2010. He said claims 1/3 of paynents are waste fraud abuse. And we haven’t cut the “bad stuff” and keep the “good stuff”. The exact same thing Pubs are saying today. The propaganda is so frustrating and the MSM is a willing participant. They are so harmful to te future of our country. I honestly don’t see a good path forward
