Post Game Thoughts

Post game thoughts:
- hate losing to bama but we will build on this.
- 2 loss UGA makes playoff. But we can run the table. Missing sec championship would be a good thing as long as we make the playoff
- coaches are great at adjustments but let’s translate that to game planning
- o line played really well
- wide outs showed out. Colby was a weapon. Evans getting some play is a good sign.
- We need to be a more vertical offense than horizontal offense. Less screens. More deep shots to set up run.
- Frazier is too dangerous to not play a single snap
- Beck showed some grit. First pick wasn’t his fault with Arian running wrong route. Last one was only partly his fault. Young didn’t fight for the ball.
- Luckie should start at tight end. Yurosek shouldn’t play
- defense showed how elite they are once adjustments were made. Remember 2021 d gave up 40+ bama.
- Starks had a very bad game.
- Bolden tackles. Need to get him on the field.

Serious Question on #32 and setting the edge.

Why is he even playing? He can’t be the best option there. We have had trouble setting the edge all year and he has been notably bad (not just this year either). I think that might have been the number one area they came in trying to exploit and were able to whenever they wanted to in the first 20 min. It’s been so apparent to us fans the last few years. What am I missing and why can’t we find someone who can do this consistently?

We desperately need a dominant receiver

Switch receiver corps last night and it makes a difference. I’m only addressing the offensive side of the ball. The D had its own problems early. But we have to sign or pay a couple of these highly rated wr’s that we lose to Alabama and OSU (or elsewhere). Having Luther Burden would have been nice.
Running wrong routes (coaching too) and dropping passes is killing us.
While I’m ranting, a couple dominant tackles wouldn’t hurt us any. And how is it possible we have the defensive back guru of college football but our corners (who are 4/5*} play so poorly?

Anyone else feeling strangely optimistic?..

First off, of course I am pissed and humiliated to lose to Bama yet again. I’ll be staying far from the national media this week. That said, I do feel oddly optimistic this morning. Hear me out:

After the Kentucky game and at the end of the first half last night, I was very much worried. It felt as if we were witnessing the downfall of our short-lived dynasty. I was questioning everything from Bobo, to our culture, to our talent, to our leadership, to our level of want and desire. It was bad. But then we came back and looked awesome. The defense held Bama in check for long stretches. The offense looked dynamic with playmakers galore and Beck, when not turning it over, was throwing beautiful passes. Honestly, at halftime I really thought we would never see that team emerge. But then there it was, fighting tooth and nail until the end.

One reason I think we didn’t see it before is because we discovered ourselves to some extent last night. Adversity will do that. Beck isn’t perfect, but he did have that Dawg in him in the second half. The last pass wasn’t ideal, but we never should have even been in that position having trailed a top 4 team by 23 on the road. He put the team on his back for stretches and got us there. I think that experience will pay dividends all the way through the playoff.

In the new era, teams shouldn’t peak too early. There should be impetus for further growth and improvement at this point in the season, and a tough loss provides that. We have a few more weeks now to keep growing. We absolutely need to beat Texas now, but I do think we will round into form with this game under our belt and we’ll have a great chance. We’ll get better, healthier, and more cohesive. We just need to start faster, but I’m confident we’ll work on that, as well.

Never like to lose and there are no moral victories, but I’m very thankful that we finally glimpsed the team we know we can be last night. In the end, we were only a play away.

Anyone want to talk about something positive? Damn this place is depressing!

Seems like the same threads on repeat: bashing Beck/Bobo, Kirby callouts, defense bad, and long thoughts of the game.

How about everyone share something positive… doesn’t have to be from the game, something recently from life in general

We gotta at least try to get this place out of the nuclear bomb size hole in the ground that we’re in

This loss comes down to 2 things…

The defensive game plan and overall play by certain individuals was pathetic. Slow start by the O was terrible but this loss is on the D.

Secondly, Pollack was 100% spot on. We have a lot of good players on offense but no great players. This includes Beck. He’s good not great. Milroe and Williams are elite playmakers and those 2 alone killed us last night. Can’t believe Kirby couldn’t come up with a better plan to defend those 2 guys.

Now that emotion of the game is over, a couple things that are concerning to me….

@HacksawDawg has mentioned multiple times about our “missing” thing we don’t seem to have, I agree, not sure what it is, but I think deep down there I some sort of entitlement syndrome starting to show and we are expecting things to just happen for us(especially coming from Beck, our supposed offensive leader), but I digress. These are things that I am not familiar with seeing a Kirby coached team:
1. Poor tackling - we have always been a fundamental tackling team, sure, good players can make people miss, but typically our guys are making the tackle, even on a good play by the offense, no YAC and guys tackled on the spot. Last night, and even this season, I have seen piss poor tackling every game. Even by our best players, Starks especially. What is going on with this?
2. Coaching and scheme - we did make some adjustments at half which were a huge help, but our preparedness for this game was atrocious. We acted like we didn’t know we were going against a running quarterback! While DaBoer had us nailed to a T. He knew all of our tendencies, seemed to have our playbook and had a much better plan on both sides of the ball. Smart and staff were out coached and out classed. Kirby needs to look in the mirror on this. He can start with Bobo, but he isn’t the whole issue.
3. DB play - I am at a loss for words here too. For Smart to be a DB coach and defensive minded guru, our DBs seem to be lost a lot. They had multiple guys wide open. Yeah, having to protect against a running QB has some cause to this, but our guys are getting beat, don’t turn head around when they should, and Bama’s freshmen and young DBs seem to have been better coached than our guys who have been in the system a lot. A head scratcher for me.
4. Blitz packages - or pass rush, is strange to me. I know they had to plan around Milroe, but even when we blitzed during passing downs, we still could not get to Milroe. It was called out by Herbstrit a few times, but we had a few times where our blitzers were running right into where a double team was happening, and they seem to pick up our guys easily. Why is this? I remember Dean, Walker, and Tindal always having open blitz lanes when they did it, is our scheme bad now? Were those guys 10 times better than our current guys?

Last thing, and this has been said many times on the board lately, Beck just doesn’t have that “it” to him, and having Bobo lead that side of the ball is starting to show why a lot of people were concerned about this hire. He just seems to easily be coached against. How much of that is Beck and how much is on Bobo is open for discussion, as we have discussed the ability for Beck to check into different plays than what Bobo calls, but this combo is not elite.

Why would you try to score at that point? Still could’ve run it

Two timeouts, could have run clock, then score. Hate to be that guy, but this is very similar to a lot of Bobo situations in the past. Congrats to the Dawgs for fighting hard, Bobo called a good 2nd half, but my ONLY complaint is that there has been a pattern of weird play calls at critical moments in close games from the CMR era and last years SEC Championship game. Just my 2cents.

Questions About Last Night

Y’all help me out with some questions please:

1. Wide receiver Anthony Evans seemed to play a lot of snaps in the second half and we haven’t seen him much before. Whose spot was he taking at the time? Who did he sub in for?

2. Is it just me or is Lawson Luckie clearly establishing himself as the better tightend? Why do we not give him more snaps and throw him the ball more? He is a weapon.

3. Was Muschamp not being co- defensive coordinator an issue last night? Just can’t believe it took us 4 straight touchdowns given up to adjust the defense.

4. We struggled on the edge last night in defense. The edge was the very thing Auburn exposed on our defense last year. Anybody besides me worried that they gash us again?

A lot of work to do and we have to get better in several places.

But one area I’m no longer concerned about is grit and toughness. We had every opportunity to rollover and take it but didn’t. How many fans mailed it in after the first quarter?? More than a few. Beck was awful at times. He was on the money at times. Gunslinger Beck was unbelievable. He has to continue to get better though. Tackling has to get better. The first part to getting better is effort and leadership. There’s reason for optimism. Lick our wounds for a day and then get ready for auburn. There is nothing they would like more than to keep us out of the playoffs. No slip ups the next two weeks and let’s get healthy going into Austin.

Best players shine brightest in the biggest moments

Who shined brightest for UGA?

Milroe & Ryan Williams immediately stand out from Bama's performance. They were clearly Bama's best players imo. Deonte Lawson & Que Russaw played helluva games too

Did any Dawgs stand head n shoulders above the rest? Maybe Beck but only in the second half. In the first half, he was a different player (very bad).

I can't think of any other dawgs that really shined last night
