Always hated conference strength arguments...

...and fortunately, now that the expanded playoffs has arrived, the whole argument is a lot less relevant.

I'm not an "SEC fan" in the sense that I don't cheer for any team other than UGA and I don't care if the SEC teams go 0-13 in other nonconference matchups. I really just don't care one way or the other. HOWEVER, I do at least recognize the effect of Georgia winning the SEC conference and being able to claim it won the toughest conference in the county vs winning the conference and being saddled with the caveat that it was a terrible conference. I get it. To whatever extent that conference strength may impact seeding in the new playoff, I suppose it may matter a little. But I digress.

With the way the SEC has started the season (1-3) in the biggest games, I'm seeing a lot of "SEC is overrated" rhetoric floating around. It got me curious to see if it was just typical SEC Hate that we always hear or if there was actual merit to it. So I figured I'd look at the preseason expectations of each team involved to see if the rhetoric is warranted. Here's the 5 SEC vs P4 games from this weekend. I'm including the preseason predictions of how each team would finish since we don't yet know where they will actually finish.

Dawgs 34 - Clemson 3 (SEC 1 vs ACC 1 / Also National 1 vs National 14)
- SEC's best vs ACC's best seems fairly relevant
- Result: SEC Team dominant - as expected based on national rankings

ND 23 - Texas AM 13 (SEC 9 vs Independent / National 20 vs National 7)
- SEC's 9th best team and 20th ranked in the country vs 7th ranked in country
- Result: Despite being a home game, the SEC team lost to the predicted better team by 10 points; game was close mostly but ND proved to be better team

Miami 41 - fUF 17 (SEC 12 vs ACC 2 / National 19 vs Unranked)
- One of worst teams in the SEC gets embarrassed by a title favorite in the ACC
- Result: Despite being a home game, the SEC team gets treated like a red-headed stepchild for 3 hours / ACC team doing the Lord's work and making reasonable people proud

USC 27 - LSU 20 (SEC 5 vs BIG 10 5 / National 13 vs National 23)
- Two evenly matched teams play a tight game that goes down to the wire
- Result: Evenly matched teams on neutral site, predicted to finish in similar positions in respective conferences, played an even game that Big 10 won at the end

Vandy 43 - VT 27 (SEC 14 vs ACC 6)
- Didn't see this game
- Result: Predicted worst SEC team beats mid-tier ACC team

Overall: SEC went 2-3 with one surprise win where the worst team punched way above their weight class and one expected win team that just dominated the top team from another conference. Among the losers, we had one embarrassment when a bad SEC team faced a top 2 team from another conference. We had one solid loss when a middle of the pack team faced a Top 10 team. And we had one close loss in an evenly matched game.

Conclusion: TBD - I don't think anything that happened this weekend can tell us anything definitively about the conference as a whole.

Still to Come (next 2 weeks):

Texas at Michigan (SEC 2 vs Big 10 4)
Arky at OKST (SEC 12 vs Big 12 6)
Cal at Auburn (SEC 10 vs ACC 12)
Tenn vs NCST (SEC 7 vs ACC 4)
Bama at Wisc (SEC 3 vs Big 10 9)
BC at Mizzou (SEC 6 vs ACC 11)
Miss at WF (SEC 4 vs ACC 13)

Is Marvin Jones Jr. a sock?

Because he always gets caught in the wash... then starts running down the field next to the play without actually making any. Every single play last night he either gets stood up or freezes until the play is by him. No intensity, no hand fighting, not a care in the world just robbing people blind. FSU deserves him. Both seek credit for something they've never done in three years- lived up to the hype.

Gump reaction to Clem getting beat down....

"DeBoer would have us up 35-0 by now" Gump: Nothing Georgia is doing. Actually, their defense has been fooled every play just poor Clemson execution

"It was all about that all-american TE, Pawl" Gump: Dawgs are already missing Bowers.

Totally objective Gump: Even though Georgia moved the ball and Clemson did not, Clemson looks the better team to me. Clean up some execution issues and this may be a long day for the Dawgs. Clemson defense is no joke.

"Now that they playin' somebody, they ain't got nobody Pawl" Gump: They lost all of their playmakers from last year, that’s why I don’t understand all the Beck love

"Kirby took the ACC refs to Tybee this past summer" Gump: Is it just me or are the refs consistently spotting Clemson short…

QB scout Gump: It’s the Georgia factor. Put Beck on Florida and he’s a slightly above average QB in the media’s eyes.

"Our backup QBs would start on over 120 FBS teams" Gump: Klubnick was their backup plan, Imagine if Ty would have chosen Clemson over Bama.

Rolo Gump: Cash Jones could be a problem, dude is quick.

First half Dawgventing Gump: UGA Offense no where near explosive, not even close. All that talent that left is showing

"Carson McElroy IYAM" Gump: Beck’s solid but I don’t get the first-rounder/Heisman hype around him. It’s harder without Bowers and McConkey to throw to.

Hypocrisy Gump: If you ever need a picture of a true "butthurt" fan, pick any Georgia fan when something goes against them.

First half Dawgventing Gump II: 100% agree. Beck is overrated. Plus he is coached by Bobo and I've never been impressed with Bobo. Monken was able to coach his players up but Bobo, not so much.

13-3

Jealous Gump:
Is it just me, or is UGA not that impressive?

"We were wrong, they ain't playin' nobody even today" Gump: They don't look like the unstoppable juggernaut the media made them out to be, but it's game 1 and they're likely to cover cause Clemson's O is so putrid.

20-3

Wishful thinking Gump: I know it’s early and they have suspensions but I feel the QB might be a bit overrated and I don’t see great WR play.

Kirby ain't chit Gump:

UGA is just too talented. You or I could call plays for them and likely win 9 games in our sleep.

Larry the Cable Gump: Clemson couldn’t score if they walked into a women’s prison with a stack of pardons.

"We gone average 2.8 yards per rush just like we did the last time we ran all over 'em" Gump: Clempson has had some good gains on the ground,I'm thinking bama should do pretty well running the ball on ga.

Bizarro Donut Gump: Geez UGA's O players just block and hold the block forever.

Suffering Gump: Georgia hype train is going to be insufferable now.

Annual loathing Gump: It is every single year. Tiresome.

Tip of the cap Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. cap Gump: My goodness, I know I'm late but that Starks INT was nuts.

Gump humor: The game hasn't passed by Dabo. Right now, he is on his Blackberry, posting on his MySpace page a message to the recruits that Clemson can still win the ACC championship. Always looking ahead.

Forgot who his QB is Gump: On Caleb Downs
Yeah it might make me a bad person but I don’t wish this dude well at all.

He was supposed to be the leader on our Defense and just straight dipped in the middle of the night for a bag of cash.

I’d love to play them and throw the ball all over him.

Am wondering how the buyouts of Swinney and Norvell might impact Clemson and FSU leaving ACC.

Dabo's buyout is a ridiculous $60M in 2024; Norvell's a paltry $6M. Both schools are looking at an estimated $500M each to leave the ACC.

Clemson broke even on a $140M budget in 2022. FSU ended up $2.5M in the red even though taking in $170M in revenues. By contrast, UGA raked in $203M, accrued $169M in expenses, and, thus, netted, $34M. Even with that, UGA ranks 5th behind Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, and Michigan in total revenues... but, first in net revenue.

Clearly, being in the ACC is not a financial windfall. And, it's not looking like things will get better, soon. It's football-focused schools (i.e. Clemson, FSU, and Miami) will not be able to compete with the big boys without the TV and playoff revenues.

While I don't think Clemson can afford to buy-out Dabo AND negotiate with the ACC; FSU can kick Norvell to the curb almost at anytime... as the buyout is so low it makes no difference in ACC negotiations.

Once again.... it's great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

More media takes on the Clem spanking: Cole Cubelic, Cover 3

Cube Show

CC: This was done in dominant fashion. Some people will say: "The score's not indicative. It was close. 6-0 at the half." Okay. But if you dive into this game plan of Bobo, it was not extensive early. Just get the ball out quick into the deep flat, make Clemson run a little bit, feel them out. I will admit the Clemson DL was causing problems early on. Georgia's OL was not dominant early. But here's the cool part about it. Mike Bobo didn't panic (Just like our in-game dawgventers😂) . He didn't start throwing the ball all over and down the field. Didn't try to hit deep balls in coverage. Didn't start running reverses and all that crazy shit. He stayed who he was. It took some time to figure it out. It took some time to wear that defensive front down. He started leaning on them and oh by the way, you may have your new dude at RB. His name is Nate Frazier. There was a pitch out left later in the game. You had a TE getting out cracking, doing what should be done. Greene pulling out at LT, knocking somebody around. You got two OGs 8 and 9 yards down the field trying to climb up to the second level. Wrs were blocking and Frazier's cutting all the way back across the field. There was also a wheel route where Beck hit that thing down the sideline. When they are all in rhythm and playing on the same page, they're gonna be tough to stop.

The physicality continues to come. Colbie Young looked bigger than I expected. He looked like a monster out there. He's gonna be a huge RZ threat. And guess what. We told you about Humphreys on this show and who is their third down go to guy? London Humphreys, former Vandy WR, with some big catches in this game.

Thought Beck was sharp in this game. Struggled a little early, but again they figured it out. It's a quality opponent and it's one of the better defensive fronts UGA will play this year. No ifs, ands or buts. That's one of the best front sevens UGA will play and look at what they did. They handled it.

Defensively, Mykel flashed. Brinson did some really nice things inside. Miller did a couple of nice things. Saw Stackhouse. He's been around awhile. But that's not what stuck out to me. What stuck out to me is they can run. We knew Mondon could run, but R. Wilson gets in the game and he looks like he's headhunting. No negative connotation on that at all. I'm meaning the MPH he was hitting on his GPS. Damon Wilson can fly. Gabe Harris getting down the edge and trying to do some damage. Chaz Chambliss, holding blockers on the screen and letting his teammates make plays. Jackson and Starks coming down in the box. KJ Bolden's flying down. They are fast. Loved J. Walker's usage. He's gonna be a massive piece in what this defense can turn into this year. Speed to the ball. Precision with how they operate. It's just different. If I'm a UGA fan I'm feeling really good about what I saw on film.

Cover 3

Chip Patterson: Georgia looked really good. And they didn't have either of their top two RBs. Offense took a little while to warm up but they got into a rhythm. What you think Tom?

Tom Forinelli: I think when it got to 20-3, the Clemson defense just kind of laid down because they knew it was pointless. They knew their offense wasn't gonna score. It was like "All right boys, let's just save something for next week."

Bud Elliott: I don't think this is the game we should be criticizing Clemson for not getting players from the portal. When you lose to Duke or teams you should beat, that's fair. But Georgia out recruits Clemson at the high school level by a meaningful amount. Georgia has the best roster in the country and I don't think it's fair. And the broadcast did a nice job of looking at Clemson and the portal, but I'm thinking "This is when we're gonna do this?" What amount of portaling could have helped Clemson with Georgia today? Give Clemson Cam Ward and they're still gonna lose. They're just not as big and physical and fast as UGA is. And UGA is also way better at the QB position. And that's because Georgia signs the best looking HS kids out there and develops the crap out of them. They got Colbie Young who was one of the only big body x's in the portal.

Tom Forinelli: You didn't lose to UGA because you didn't use the transfer portal. You lost to Georgia because you were playing Georgia in Atlanta of all places. Georgia's really freaking good.

Chip Patterson: You mean that team we picked to win the title?

Tom Forinelli: Carson Beck doesn't get the opportunities to do the cool off schedule stuff because he plays behind an incredible OLine that keeps him out of those situations. But he's good when he gets off schedule and has to get out of the pocket and he showed that a few times today. I'm impressed. The guy we saw at this time last year compared to what we're seeing now, I'm just incredibly impressed at the growth that guy has shown.

Bud E.: And they were patient. They were getting beat up front in the first half. But to Tom's point earlier, Clemson seemed to quit at some point in the second half. I mean, it's hard when your offense gives you two snaps in enemy territory for the entire first half.
I think if a team could, not would, because we don't know, but the officials were letting the DBs on both teams get really grabby. If an officiating crew is really strict and calls PI, maybe a team with good WRs can do something.

Chip: Apple, tree. Apple, Tree. Kirby, Saban. That just kept going through my head. How many times did we see Alabama do this in season openers with Saban. Remember that FSU opener with a one vs. three matchup. From the middle of the second quarter on you were like "Oh, God! FSU has a good defense. I don't know how many Bama's gonna score, but FSU will never match it." That's what today felt like.

Bud E.: I agree. It would really take a colossal screw up by Georgia for Clemson to win that game.
