My Thoughts

My Thoughts on the Game

I don’t often post here after a loss but I was at the game last night and just wanted to share my thoughts as a mere causal observer and fan. I respect all of you here and have enjoyed being a part of this board and contributing as a fan and as an “insider” (haha) when the opportunity presents itself with my job.

Gotta give credit to the Alabama staff—they had a solid game plan. (I have a personal friend on the Bama Staff so I know the work they put in for sure) Especially early on, they attacked the edges of our defense with the QB run game and used motion to create mismatches. They really did a good job moving our defenders out of position. On defense, Bama disguised their coverages well, mixing zone and man, plus bringing pressure at just the right times. Milroe is looking like a legit Heisman contender, and Ryan Williams…that kid could end up being an all-time great at Alabama. Did you know he’s only 17? (I know, I’m being a bit of a smart ass, ha).

Now, on to the Dawgs. I hated the outcome, but I loved the championship response they showed. After being down 28-0, we outscored Bama 34-6 (makes you wonder what could’ve been) and even took a 34-33 lead. That first quarter was rough and set the tone for the game. Dropping passes that could lead to scoring chances and committing dumb penalties on key third downs really hurt us. But Carson Beck bounced back and showed real poise in the second half, And can we talk about Dillon Bell? That dude is a playmaker! We’ve gotta keep getting him the ball; he’s so versatile. I was so proud of the defense for hanging in there and giving us a chance to even come back into this game. I’m not gonna get into the Bobo theatrics you either like him or you don’t. I’m not here to sway your opinion.

In the end, it’s another tough chapter in our series with Bama. But honestly, this matchup felt different than even last year. Bama’s got a new coaching staff and scheme, so all the institutional knowledge we carried over from Kirby’s time with Saban didn’t really apply. It was Bama on the jerseys, but an entirely new team and strategy. Comparing this game to past matchups doesn’t really make sense, in my opinion.

Finally, shoutout to the atmosphere at Bryant-Denny—it was electric. The fans were electric. Would love to see the Tide play in Sanford during the Kirby Smart era (They will next year!) always feels like we are on the road against these guys. Would love our fans to respond in a huge way the next two home games and make life hell for Auburn and State before the dawgs head to Austin. (I have more thoughts on the BDS Stadium atmosphere but I’ll share that later)

There’s plenty to work on, but if you don’t trust Kirby to get it right after everything he’s done to bring this program back to the national stage, you probably need your head checked!

Bama is our Dad

The title says it all…

My main takeaways from last night:
1.) Their athletes look bigger, way faster, and stronger than ours.
2.) why does it take this coaching staff one half of football to make adjustments? This is clear for every game… do we suck that bad at developing a pregame plan?
3.) Our “great OLine” has looked average at best for 2 years in a row.
4.) WR recruiting is becoming a crucial hitch in the program.
5.) I never want to hear “havoc rate” ever again when talking about the Dline/pass rush. It means nothing if you can’t get the QB in the ground or disrupt the pass.

Championship goals are still out in front, but man…. The offense looks light years behind other top programs. At least visually that is

I know I’m probably in the minority on the 12 team playoff

But I like it for this very reason. Unlike prior years, this doesn’t kill us. With the 12 team playoff it only matters what happens and who is hot playing well at the end of the year. Not week 4 or 5. We certainly need to improve in a lot of places but if we can get healthy and get some wr’s to step up, we will be in it at the end. And if we can get it together and win out we can still win the conference.

The truth is pretty clear. They won the first half, we won the second....almost.

bama made the clutch plays when they had to and we didn't. They made a TD the 2 pt conversion. we couldn't make the 2pt conversion. When they scored the TD with over 2.00 minutes I told me wife we got a break because otherwise they eat up the clock and kick a last second FG. But there is absolutely no excuse to call, or throw that endzone 50/50 ball with 50 seconds and two TOs left. We were loaded with options and choked....that simple.

There were some positives; Beck turning into a QB in the 2nd half, halftime adjustments and making 5-6 had to have 4th down conversions...probably a UGA record for a game. And digging down on the road to make it a game.

Bama brother-in-law..

Is insufferable this morning. "Kirby looks like he's still on the tides payroll. 1-6 Baby! Rawwwwl Tideeeee." Nothing more I'd love to see than for Kirby and company to sack up and start the revenge tour. I believe this game wakes us up and we lock in. No other coach I'd rather after a loss like this than the Kang. Humility was probably needed with this bunch...let's see how we respond. Let's ride!

Go Dawgs!

Exasperating Thing About Last Pass

We brought Colbie Young to be the big bodied WR who could high point the ball and win match ups.

The last play on offense we had a ideal match up. The very large Colbie Young one on one with a much smaller player and no safety help. If Young stops just past the goal line, comes back to the ball and high points it - then it is a TD or PI. Instead, he keeps drifting back and not only allows the defender to under cut him -- but also takes himself out of position to prevent the interception. The Coaches and Beck trusted him to go get the ball and he did not do his job.

This is particularly exasperating because Young made the same error a few plays earlier when the Bama defender face guarded him and did not draw the PI. When I saw the ball in the air, i was sure that Young was going to correct his error and go get the ball. I still cannot believe it.

Last night

Was brutal to start with. You can’t spot them 28 points and expect to have a shot. They didn’t come out and whip us up front, they completely neutralized our DL all together and killed our secondary to the edges. Our spill technique on the edge got scrapped mid game.

Starks was BRUTAL last night, Carson was brutal for 2 and a half quarters. Can’t have your 2 captains play that bad in the biggest game of the year. Lovett needs to be benched. I have tried to listen to the guys who see practice and what they say. He’s not fast, he doesn’t get open, he doesn’t catch the ball. I thought it was Arian who was the problem or Bell. No, it’s 6. He’s not any good.

Defensively we will be fine, they busted 3 times. Julio doesn’t need to CB2, it needs to be Harris or Ellis. He doesn’t find the ball. Starks doesn’t need to be 1v1 on a receiver again. Yes, Williams can flat play. He was gifted 2 very lazy, poor technique plays in the 2nd half that was the difference.

Have to run the ball earlier to cool that place down.

I say all that to say we found something second half and the team figured something out about themselves 2nd half that will carry this bunch down the stretch. We didn’t get maimed on either LOS, we got maimed to the perimeter and beat on big plays. That’s a good sign for round 2. Our DL dominated more than theirs did down the stretch. Just caught a buzz saw early.

Texas isn’t close to as good as Alabama. I’ve said that all year. Not near as big and physical and terrible on Defense. We are going to destroy them by 10+ utk nor Ole Miss have a warm chance in hell. We will play Bama or mizzou in the SECG, probably Bama.

The leaders showed who they were last night and it’s the most leadership we’ve seen since 2022. The 2023 squad lacked it all together. The loss sucks, the first half sucks. But we are better than them and when the dust settles in December that will be obvious. Flame away.
